Text Masking?
by Matt Ciara on Aug 2, 2009 at 2:35:14 am

Hi, I need some help. I'm trying to change the text on a piece of paper someone is holding up in the air. Can anyone help me?

-Thanks in advance.

Vegas doesn't have motion tracking capabilities so you'll have to a whole lot of keyframing.

Just to expand on what Mike said: the way to do this is to create keyframes so that the text moves with the piece of paper. This can further get complicated if the paper is on an angle because the replacement text has to follow the same angle as well. Other applications like Adobe After Effects, Mocha, and Boris RED/Boris FX have Motion Tracking tools that will follow the path of an objects movement and make these keyframes for you. Without such a tool, you will have to do a lot of work to make these keyframes yourself.

I would start by placing the replacement text on a track above the paper. Use Track Motion to position and size the text over the place on the paper that it needs to be. Then use keyframes to move the text with the paper. You may have to go frame-by-frame depending on the movement of the paper. Good luck.

John, thanks for expanding on my rather limited explanation.
I knew it was a quick answer but it was done very early this morning and I was half asleep already :-(

Well... I knew what you meant but I though that the original poster might not have. Besides, I was just waking up. ;-)
