Anyone use Steady Hand with .m2t files?
by Jim Murphy on Jul 2, 2009 at 2:34:51 am

When I was working in SD I would occasionally use Steady Hand to take some shakiness out of clips. I tried to make an AVI file (needed for Steady Hand) from a .m2t clip, and the AVI was totally black. Any suggestions? Jim

Try instead of getting a copy of Deshaker for Vegas (its free)
or Prodad Mercalli.

I tried Mercalli which is certainly rated good but I've yet to get a satisfactory result. It's not that it doesn't remove shaking well, but I do see at times slight jittery/shifting picture and I tried numerous combinations to no avail. I use upscale always and I can see that could cause weird transitions per frame (zooming differences).

If anyone knows how to get a reliable solid (HD) picture with any software let me know. It could be that I'm just too picky though.
For now I'll definitely stick with a steadicam whenever possible.

Steve, I should be able to make an AVI file from a .m2t file, right?

Yes that should work. What kind of AVI file is it? What is the video and audio codec? Potentially you may need to convert/remux it first.

Also what are your project properties? 32bit or 8bit?

I am new to HD, so if you think I should change something, please let me know. I am not totally sure I know where to find the answers to some of your questions, but here is what I think you want:

Video stream is MPEG2 1440x1080x12

I don't need the audio for this clip.

Project properties is 8 bit.

The AVI type is the Video for Windows option in Vegas Pro 8.

Thanks for your help.

The AVI is only the container. You choose then the codecs in the template column. E.g. DV or uncompressed YUV. That said they all should work. I just tried a HDV file and rendered as DV and played back fine fo me.

2 thing could be happening here:
- renders correctly but you don't have a player to playback AVI with codecs correctly
- And/or it's not rendered correctly because of steady hand.

Questions:
1. What happens if you turn off the steady hand filter? Does that render AVI correctly?
2. While rendering, do you see video in the output render screen?
3. Have you tried different players with codecs like Videolan, K-lite codec pack/MPC or KMPlayer?

Did you render the HDV file to AVI?

My "AVI" file will not play in Vegas Pro 8 and it will not play in Windows Media Player. I am pretty sure it is not rendering properly. It should play in Vegas if it is rendered properly. Any other ideas. Thanks, Jim

When you choose AVI, what did you select under template setting?

I tried MPEG2 1440x1080 (HDV) and had no problems with DV and Sony uncompressed YUV. So it's either issue with steady hand or you don't have codec installed to playback the AVI file.

When you encode to same format, do you then see correct playback of resulting file?

Just tried today to output to AVI using Vegas 9 and I ran into same problem:-(. File was unplayable. Never seen these issues before in Vegas 8 but maybe there's another reason. The file header appears to be correct but otherwise unplayable. VirtualDub reports bad format.

Looking into this...

Which profile are you using for your AVI file?

I reinstalled new OS and still same issue. I'm puzzled since I still have Sony YUV files that I rendered earlier that do playback correctly.

I did noticed rendered AVI uncompressed files do work but Sony YUV not anymore which is strange. The reported codec is exactly same but frames cannot be opened. I've filed a support case but not sure if that will help (so far had no success getting solutions from Sony).

One thing I noticed is that I'm able to open the AVI file in Sony so maybe this is a different problem than yours. In your case I still would try a small clip without any effects and see if you can play that back.

Here's what I found out: if I render in Vegas 8 to AVI Sony YUV (UYUV) I get a playable AVI file and in Vegas 9 I don't. I found the difference is in the format header:

Vegas 8 and Vegas 9 strf chunk:
7374 7266 2800 0000 2800 0000 8007 0000 3804 0000 0100 1000 ...
7374 7266 2800 0000 2800 0000 8007 0000 3804 0000 0100 1800 ...

Note that offset 22 I see a value of 0x10 for Vegas 8 and 0x18 for Vegas 9. Otherwise the AVI files are 100% same. Couldn't find a reference yet for strf RIFF chunk but I'm guessing it indicates the compression format. For some reason 1 extra bit is turned on 9 which makes for me the file unplayable.

I created a little program that changes that byte from 0x18 and 0x10 and it fixed the playback issue. I reported the issue with these details to Sony.

If this is the same issue as your problem I don't know. Which profile did you choose under AVI? Sony YUV or other?

Earlier I had posted a question about why Steady Hand does not work for my m2t files. I just wrote their technical support and received information that it does not work for HD, and they do not plan an upgrade. Jim
