End Action Help "Please"
by Ray Sherman on Jun 30, 2009 at 7:30:42 am

Hi,
I am having a problem in DVDA 5.0
I have 12 scene selections, 3 per page with text and image set in animation. When I preview each selection they start and play properly. These 12 selections are from each marker that I used and rendered to DVDA from Vegas.
My problem is that I cannot get them to return to the menu once the selection is over. It continues to play into the following media.
I believe that i have the proper places checked in my Media Properties. Under the End Action I have the following;
Command - Link
Destination - Most Recent Menu
Destination Item - Start

I have checked several other tabs under the arrow tabs of the above three and had no success. For example; Under Destination Item I tried Loop instead of Start. When I place the set in and out points in the timeline, I get the following text
"Link - Play Movie (Broken Chapter)" in red.
I would like to add, I followed John Rofrano in disc 3 VASST Sony Vegas Training Series (Which is awesome by the way). John has scene selections similar to mine on one page. The only thing that wasn't shown was how to do the end actions in this particular area.
If you happen to know what I'm doing wrong I would sincerely appreciate your help. Thanks in advance, Ray

common problem.
ok, you can't link from the end of a scene selection (eg chapter 2 of 3 chapters) back to any menu. All the scene selection does is specify where to start - just like a commercial DVD.

so, the solution?

you need to add the media for each chapter to the menu page multiple times (but will only be added to DVD once, physically).
Then double click one of the chapters, and it should open the timeline for that media.
Drag the yellow In and Out markers on the timeline to limit viewing to that chapter

you can then specify the End Action for that chapter

You'll be able to adjust the thumbnail for each chapter, too.

:)

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the reply. In the main menu I can create several play buttons by highlighting play then use the drag / ctrl method. At this point I can take each one and set the in and out points wanted. This works great for showing each chapter. Once played it reverts back to the main menu.
By wanting text and image buttons with animation, I can't place them all on one page. This is why I made a Scene Selection, 3 per page. All work great, but like I said, I can't make an End Action to revert back to that page. I now understand that it can't be done. Is there a way to insert pages to split up all the buttons that's created on the Main Menu? I hope I'm not confusing you or anyone that may be trying to help me. Your help is most appreciated. Thanks again, Ray

Ray, take a look at my (rather lengthy) response in the DVD scene selection markers as in comm. DVDs thread and see if it helps explain things a bit better.

Hi Ray, Thanks for the kind words on the training DVD but I feel that I let you down if your weren't sure how to do what you wanted after watching it. You are so close you're gonna laugh when you see how easy this is.

> In the main menu I can create several play buttons by highlighting play then use the drag / ctrl method. At this point I can take each one and set the in and out points wanted. This works great for showing each chapter. Once played it reverts back to the main menu.

OK, this is good and at this point you are almost done!

> By wanting text and image buttons with animation, I can't place them all on one page.

So... you can create them all on one page and then drag them to the page you really want them to be on just by dragging and dropping in the left side menu tree in DVD Architect.

> This is why I made a Scene Selection, 3 per page. All work great, but like I said, I can't make an End Action to revert back to that page.

There is no need to mess with any end actions because the default end action is to return to the menu you came from. If you drag the link to another menu, it will return to that menu by default.

> Is there a way to insert pages to split up all the buttons that's created on the Main Menu?

Yes, right-click on the main movie and insert your scene selection pages with 3 links per page. Then delete the linked videos because you don't need them anymore (they were just a simply way to create the menus). Now drag all of the copies that you made from the main menu onto the scene selection menus that you want them on. Finally, go to each scene selection menu and set the thumbnail to be whatever you want.

You should now have scene selection menus with links that play one scene and return to the menu they came from. (did I mention not to touch the end actions... they will take care of themselves) ;-)

Hi John,
Yes indeed! Your instructions placed me right where I want to be! I can't thank you enough for all the help you gave me! I'd like to add that you and Spot are two awesome trainers. I can't say enough about your VASST training videos. I'm about to upgrade to Vegas 9.0 and am looking forward to seeing what training you will offer. Again, I sincerely thank you and everyone that has helped me with this issue. Ray
