Vegas 8 render wmv speed
by Larry Brewer on May 18, 2009 at 1:09:00 am

I have uploaded 3 hrs of DVCam footage and need to render it to a .wmv file. My settings are... best, NTSC 29.97, 320 x 240, CBR, 83 smoothness, 20 kbps 32khz mono audio. I have 8 gig RAM, running Vista 64, Quad processor.

The issue is decreasing speed as the render progresses. At the start, the estimated time to completing is little over an hour. It is rendering better than 2 mins of material for every min of render time. Before the project completes, it will take more like 2 mins of render time for every min of material. The 3 hr program will take a little over 6 - 7 hrs to complete. Why does it slow down? Are there any settings that might improve the performance?

Thanks

Larry Brewer

Larry, my experience is that, unfortunately, WMV is a really slow codec for Vegas to render to and that there's not a lot you can do to speed it up.
Out of curiosity, why Best mode and 29.97 instead of Good and 15 fps?
This would speed up your render time.

I guess I just wanted better quality. My test render, before I started the 3 hr clip, showed very good speed approaching 3 to 1. Frankly, 15 fps didn't render that much faster. I also got this speed at the beginning of my 3 hr clip render. But after about 15 mins of rendering it gradually slows down. My CPU usage starts at around 85% but decreases to about 45% as my memory usage rises.

So, I can understand slow rendering, but why the gradual change in speed after the rendering starts?

I just tried your settings on a 1 hr. project.
Like yours, it started off very quickly.
However, it took about 2 min. of rendering before the completion time finally settled down.
Keep in mind that if you have any FX or titles scattered throughout your video, this will slow down the render time even more.

Thanks Mike for taking this on and showing interest.

I have noticed with most Vegas renders the "estimated time to completion" will settle down at precisely 4%. Up to that point the ETC will increase while the rendering progresses. but at exactly the 4% mark, the countdown will begin. This is not the issue I'm concerned with.

I can view the Frame count beneath the Video preview monitor during rendering. At the beginning of the render, thru at lest 15%, it is easy to estimate an approx 90 frame per sec progress. The project I'm rendering is a parade, the render speed is at least 3x for the first 15%.

I have no FX in this video. It's one continuous clip from a 184 DVCam cassette. The nature of the material is pretty much the same at the beginning, middle and end. The motion content does not vary.

The memory usage just keeps creeping up (now at 5.17 gig) and the CPU usage gradually slows down. Now at 40% average. It's as if the computer is dragging it's rendering chores along with it. I'm certain the RAM memory usage is related to the CPU slow down.

I'll let this render finish, about 1 hr remaining, and try some different memory allocation settings.

Thanks again,

Larry Brewer

8-bits may give as good final result, and a lot faster rendering.

The fact that the cpu works is just confirmation that Vegas does not use all 4 processors... Io, Honest with my dual-core, Are light-years from these problems rendering... Wmv will also slow, But here is almost in madness... Also think that Vegas is unfit for the work you are doing... Download movie on your computer and then convert it with a type converter avs video converter... Io also download the movies on your computer with a linux distro, Especially with a 64bit processor!
Good evening,
Valerio
