Hi all,
My problem is that I'm trying to edit HD footage in vegas 9 but the footage is stuttering as it just can't handle the HD info. Pre rendering sorts out the playback problem but any sort of editing is impossible as it returns to stuttering again when editing.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice...
Cheers Gareth
I'm running Vista ultimate.
New Asus laptop.
Intel 2.53Ghz
Duo T9400
Centrino 2
4GB RAM with plenty HD space.

That might be the problem right there. Sony tunes Vegas to work with standard HDV and AVCHD formats. You really should use a camera that shoots a standard format instead of the non-standard mpeg4 that the Sanyo Xacti HD camera shoots. You might want to convert the footage into an intermediary format that edits easier like CineForm.

I have noticed the same problem since moving from 8 to 9. I'm using a Sony HDR-SR12 on a Sony VGN-AR730E Viao Laptop with plenty of horsepower. Granted I wasn't able to get a clean preview playback in 8 at Best settings. But I was able to preview in pretty much 29.97 in preview. This at least allowed me to make the edits that I needed to make without rendering all the time. I was hoping that in version 9 there was a new setting or two that would help with this problem, but i haven't been able to locate it yet.

Hey...didnt solve the prob. I far as I can tell you should have a Mac for HD editing!!!! But its more a software issue for PC's. Not your computer.
I pretty much load all the files from my xacti into vegas and drop them into the time line in chronological order then I "make Movie" i.e master the whole lot out as one big master video. (probably keep this under a gig in total size) I select the format and template required.
For me its wmv - 4.8mbps HD at 720-24p.
Then I start a new project in vegas and import the movie I just created - you should then be able to edit a lot easier, minimal stutter.
Set your preview tab (above your video preview) to half in all categories Draft, preview, good, best and you should be good to go chopping up and editing away. Depending on how good your computer is..I have a new Asus 'Centrino 2' and "Half" preview quality seems to get me by ok...can be annoying but not too annoying.
If you still have problems and its still too stuttery to edit properly even after lowering the Preview tab to "quarter" in all categories you'll have to speed up your computer or convert your master video to standard definition. which is 3.8 mbps - you shouldn’t have any stutter issue in Standard Definition. (DVD quality)
