collecting lots of little clips from a bunch of files

I've got .avi files of about 10 shows, each 30 minutes long. I want to go through them and pick out 4 or 5 clips from each show where characters say something funny (so each clip will only be a few seconds long). Then I want to compile all those clips into one new video file. What's the best way to do that? It would be great if I could save each little clip and name it based on what the character says and then be able to view all the clips in the Project Media window. This would make adding the clips to the final video much easier. (I'm using Vegas 9)
Is that the best way to do it? And how can I do that in Vegas? The only editing I've done with Vegas has been to pare down 60-minute home videos into 5 minutes of good stuff by just cutting out all the boring stuff. But with this new project, I'll be cutting out 99% of the stuff, so it seems like it would be easier to clip out the good stuff and put it somewhere else rather than deleting all the bad stuff. Am I correct?

It sounds to me like you're on the right track.
Bring in show #1 and chop out the stuff you don't want.
Since you want to save each clip separately, you'll have to encode (render) it again, preferably in AVI format.
This will allow to to give each clip a unique name.
Repeat for shows 2-10.
Quality loss doing it this way is minimal as the AVI codec in Vegas is very good.
