Which version to buy

Hello, I have a bunch of video projects I plan on doing, and I will be doing things like muzzle flashes and what not, but any way, which version would be better to buy, the Platinum Pro Pack, or Vegas Pro?

sounds like you be compositing in them thar hills. Pro is more suited to the task. Studio could do the muzzle flashes, but only real way you're going to assess your needs is to try out both trial versions and see which you need.

You would be better off with EffectsLab Pro because it's an FX generator. Action Essentials is a nice set of pre-keyed video overlays that you just drop into your production but you cannot create more. With EffectsLab Pro you actually create the FX which gives you more creative control over how they look and an infinite number of possibilities. This is why it costs more but it's worth it.

To finish off, Effects lab pro is the one to purchase instead of
action essentials. Its a complete visual effects software where
'essentials' are just composited stocks.
For NLE...
Sony vegas pro 8...on top of the fact thats its one of the best
professional NLE's, it does compositing better than any of its counterparts.

I use Vegas Pro 8 and do all of my compositing work there. I use a lot of stuff from Detonation Films in my movies and they look good. Here is a composite that I added to a Magic Lecture Promo. If you follow this link the video will start to play right away. It is about 15 seconds into the video. http://www.edellismagic.com/MultiMedia.html
It is done with Vegas and a special effect from DF (http://www.detonationfilms.com/).
Harold
You can see that I added the effect as well as highlighted the background as the spark travels to the floor. All the sound is from the Sound Effects series from Digital Juice.

If you are going to do compositing you will almost have to use Vegas Pro. The Studio versions are limitted to 4 video tracks. Vegas Pro has as many as you want.

Only you can answer that. If you just want pre-made overlays get Essentials. If you want to make your own, get EffectsLab Pro. Personally, given the choice, I would buy EffectsLab Pro.
Don't forget there is a free demo of EffectsLab Pro so you can download it and try it out before you buy. I'm a big believer in try-before-you-buy. This way there are no surprises.

I tried the Effectslab Pro demo and decided that I want to get Action Movie Essentials instead. Does anyone know how you get the special effects off the DVD?

I've never seen an Action Movie Essentials DVD but I would imagine that they are just video files that you drag and drop into your projects? Do you have the DVD? What's on it?

I thought Adam answered your question. He said to just drag and drop the video files from the DVD onto the Vegas timeline and set their properties to Straight Alpha. Did that not work?
Have you looked on the DVD? What did you see? I don't have this product but I've got to imagine they are just video files on the DVD.

The DVD is just the physical media that it comes on; i.e., it's just a 4.7GB disc. It's not a DVD that you play in your DVD player. It will probably just have a bunch of video files on it with alpha channels that you just drop onto your timeline. I would just copy the DVD onto your hard drive so that you always have them available when you need them.

I just got Vegas Pro 8 and I was reading the End-User License Agreement and I was wonder if someone could elaborate on this: You may not use the Software for any purpose that: (a) infringes the copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of publicity or any other right of a third party, (b) is or may be libelous, defamatory or slanderous, or (c) any other us that is illegal in nature.
I kind of get what it's saying, but could someone elaborate further please? Thanks.

First, congratulations for reading the End User License Agreement. You are now in an elite club of people who actually read these things. ;-)
Second, I'm not lawyer and this should not be taken as legal advice. If you should need legal advice, ask a lawyer.
Third, I believe it's there to cover themselves in case someone uses their software to pirate movies. At least they can say that they said the software was not to be used for that purpose and that the pirate was in violation of the EULA so Sony cannot be held accountable.
Fourth, you mileage may vary, void where prohibited by law, do not try this at home.
