Sony Vegas Rendering Issue!!!

I finally finished this video I've been working on for months. I have been continuously attempting to render it, but Sony Vegas keeps freezing. My profressor gave me an external hard drive to use but before I ever got the chance to use it I decided to see if I could render it one last time but rendering the whole video to another track and then rendering that... It froze again. I tried to open the video in class, but now, for some reason, I can no longer open it in the program. It will not let me drag it into the program, or open it from the file menu. It's really frustrating. It also says the the media files are offline, but I don't know why that would affect it because I've downloaded all of the media clips I'm using onto my computer. There is another unsual message that appears where the specs. for the audio and video aspects of the file should be. But I can't read the message completely it says something like "Cannot open" something something. I will edit this post later if I can read it clearly.
Any help is VERY appreciated because I am so proud of this video and if its unretrieveable, I think I will die!!!

I saved it immediately. In two different places. Lol.
However, I do have another issue.
Everytime I try to render it, it either freezes or gives me this error message "A problem occured while trying to render ________ - The reason for the error could not be determined."

Are you using any really large (2,000 x 2,000 pixels or larger) images?
If yes, what format are they?
If they're very large, shrink them down to no more than 2X project size (i.e. 1440 x 960 for NTSC).
If they're in TIF format, change them to PNG.
What kinds of video files are you using (i.e. DV or something else)?

Sorry if I sound like a total idiot, but, I have no idea what your asking me. Like the size of clips and whatnot. Lol.
Is there a way for me to check it in the program?
I downloaded my clips from brooke-lucas.org
Most of the clips were in formats that had to be extracted to be placed into V7. I think it was WMV, although I'm not positive.

Chelsea, I looked at the site you mentioned and the clips seem to be OK (yes, they are WMV format) for Vegas.
What I'm really asking about are images (especially if they come from a digital still camera) and if you use any really large ones in your project.
If you switch to Detail mode in the Vegas media pool, it should tell you what format all your files are and what the image size is.
Let us know if there are any really large ones (like I mentioned above) and what format (JPG, etc.) they are.

Thank you very much for your diligence and actually checking the site. :)
I'm actually not using any sort of images in my project. All of the pieces of media in my video are video clips. I do not have any stills, or anything.

No. It freezes randomly. Sometimes, it freezes and then produces an error message and sometimes it doesn't freeze at all. When it doesn't freeze, it says that an unknown error has occured.
I am just completely confused.

Have you tried rendering it on another computer?
Copy all your files onto the external hard drive your professor offered and try rendering it on a different machine.
I work in an educational environment and know only too well that school computers can be somewhat temperamental, to say the least.

The computer its on is actually my personal laptop, which is windows. And the only other computer that I have available is my boyfriends iMAC. Can I transfer it to that? Or would it not work if I transferred from a Windows to an Apple/Mac? The iMac also doesn't have Sony Vegas. My boyfriends computer and my school computers only work with Final Cut.

Is there a reason you're doing this on Vegas and not Final Cut?
I can understand wanting to be able to work on it at home but it sounds like that decision isn't working out too well.
All I can suggest at this point is to render the WMV files (your original clips) to DV-AVI and substitute these for the files in your project.
There will be a small quality loss doing it this way but I think getting the project done should be a higher priority than picture quality.
If your render fails with AVI files, then your computer has a problem :-(

The only reason I am not doing it on his computer is because he JUST got it a few weeks ago and I have none of my clips/progress on his computer. While, I have started my other projects on his, this one was very important to me.

It depends on what you want to do with it.
If your ultimate destination is the web, then try a render to DV-AVI, start a new project, load the AVI in and render that to WMV.
If it's for a DVD, you'd render to MPEG-2 and AC-3 (video & audio respectively).
The settings to use depend on the length of the completed video.

The final use is for the web, although at some point when I change everything to Final Cut, I will need to put it on a disc.
The full length is about 3 minutes.

In that case (and since, for whatever reason, a WMV render doesn't work), I'd render to DV-AVI, load that file back into Vegas and render that to WMV or whatever other file format you want/need.
Be sure to hang onto the original files for future use.

So. I approaced every angle possible while dealing with this rendering issue. Just for some information, I did download this version off of the internet. I never purchased the product. I know that that is illegal, but now I'm beginning to think that that is the reason for my rendering malfunctions. I know that that admition can lead to serious repercussions but my main priority is being able to save and render my project.
I'm going to start with the first technique I used:
When I tried to render the video in a MPEG-2 File, the render froze
at a random percentage and then there was an error message that read: "The Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Proccess ID = 0x1718(5912)
Thread ID = 0xa7c(2588)"
There were two options. "(1)Click OK to terminate the application" or "(2)Click cancel to debug the application." I chose number 2.
Then I attempted to save the file in an avi format and the render froze at 3% but the time kept growing. I closed Sony Vegas using the Task Manager.
I restarted my computer and decided to go in an uninstall and delete all of the big files on my computer(The Sims games, mostly). I then tried to render it as a WMV and I got an error message that said "An error occurred while creting the media file. The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usuage by closing other applications." However, I had no other programs running at the time. So I restarted my computer.
I went back into my computer and deleted every file, document, etc. that I no longer needed. I tried to render the video into two serperate parts in WMV format, but the render froze at 56% during the first part.
Then I tried to render it in Quicktime format and it produced an error message that read: "An error occured during the current operation. An exception has occured." I tried to view the details, but it said that there were none available.
Then I tried to render it in WMV format again and it produced the same error message. It was very extensive and it said that: "An error occured during the current operation. An exception has occured." When I clicked on details, there was a very long description that I saved and will post as soon as I'm back on my computer(I'm at school right now).
Here are a few specs about my Sony Vegas program:
Sony Vegas 7.0
7.0e (Build 2.16)
I'm not sure if that means anything.
Now, if anyone knows what all of this means it would be greatly appreciated. And I have two questions.
One: Is it possible for me to save my project as it is in Sony Vegas on an external harddrive and then upload it onto Final Cut and save it that way? Or will it not work? Will I have to render it first in order to do that?
Two: Do you think it would help the situation if I went out and purchased Sony Vegas 8 and someone got the files onto it from Sony Vegas 7. I'm not sure if you can transfer projects like that (like - I would be able to install Sony Vegas 8 and open the project from Sony Vegas 7 and work on it in 8) and then I could delete 7?

Chelsea, it's a well-known fact that most versions of Vegas that you find "lying by the side of the road" can cause you more grief than it's worth.
Having said that, it's quite possible that installing this version has corrupted your computer in some unknown way, shape or form.
The only way to bring it into Final Cut is to import the original files and start from scratch as there's no magic "export to Final Cut" button that will work reliably.
If you were to buy it (and students can get it for a very good price), my recommendation would be to format your PC to make sure you get rid of any (unknown) bad files on it and then reinstall everything.
I know it's not the message you were looking for but, in my opinion, it's the best route to take right now.
