Sony Vegas Hardware
by Joel Servetz on Aug 23, 2008 at 10:08:33 pm

I currently have Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum Edition (which I'm still learning)and am considering upgrading to Vegas Pro 8. My previous non-linear editing experience was all on a Draco Kron (hey you, yeah you, quit laughing, it worked ok). I'm getting ready to re-start a dormant video production business (personal histories, documentaries, legal, events, etc.), presently with DV but soon with HDV and would appreciate some recommendations about an ideal hardware configuration for the Pro version of Vegas, including any opinions regarding computer and peripheral brands and models. My current computer is a Sony VAIO Pentium 4, 3.0 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, the usual consumer computer bells and whistles. It handles Movie Studio ok, but I know something newer with dual or quad core processors and more RAM would probably be best. All opinions are welcome. Thanks.

The difference of the preview window framerate with a duo core and a quad core is un-noticable to me but the render times are much faster with the quad. If render times, "long movies" is a concern then spring for the quad. The machine you have now "Vaio" will run it just fine but will be a lilttle sluggish with the preview window set to best. Hope this helps. Danny Hays
