Talking head
by Matt Surf on Aug 17, 2008 at 8:51:40 pm

hello,
I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere on the site but I can't for the life of me find it. I want to create an online cutout of a presenter / talking head for my website using Sony Vegas Pro but don't know where to start. Does anyone know how to do this, or can suggest any pointers, places to look online to get this information?

Many thanks

Matt

Hello Matt,
Whenever i want to create some character or characters like something
that you described for a project....i first design or get a
picture (jpeg) of the character...then use "Crazy Talk" from
http://www.reallusion.com/crazytalk/ to animate and lip sync my character to my liking, then polish up everything in Vegas. Hope this help in giving you some ideas.

You can shoot the presenter in front of a green screen with some extra green screen cloth in front of the presenter from the chin down and chromakey everything out but the head. You may need to use another chromakey in the effects chain if the two greens don't match well enough for one to key both out. Then export with a transparent alpha channel. I think Vegas does that. Hope this helps.

Also you can just crop the video, put it on the track above and do a picture-in-picture. Another way is to use Vegas's Bezier masking to cut out the head.

Ed Troxel's Tips & Tricks newsletters go into some detail on these.

Vol 1 #2, 3 & 4 March 2003 go over PIP, and for the Bezier mask look for Vol 3 #03 of June 2005 in the archives.
