Error occurred starting Vegas, system is running low on memory
by Kunal Savkur on Jul 22, 2008 at 5:32:40 pm

I've tried this on several computers, but keep getting the same error. Installation goes successfully, but when I run the program, I see the splash screen for a few seconds, then an error window that says:

"An error occurred starting Vegas Pro. The system is running low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing applications."

This happens for all versions of Vegas I try to install on my PC. I have Vegas 6 on my laptop and it works fine with all kinds of apps running. I've tried expanding the paging file size and disabling terminal services, but still no luck. I have 1GB RAM, and a 2.0Ghz AMD Athlon processor, so I don't think that should be a problem. Some folks on other forums seem to be having the same issue, but no solutions yet. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hi
What else do you have running in the background? You don't happen to have Norton (Symantec) do you? If a lot of programs are running in the background that may cause your problem.

Hit ctrl-alt-del to bring up the Task Manager. Check applications as well as processes. Then check the preformance tab.

I think I had that problem once years ago with W98SE. I just re-booted and everything was okay. But I'm thinking your got something else going on.

I do have Norton (Symantec) actually. A bunch of other processes going on, but none that take up more than 15MB of memory. Should I try uninstalling Norton and see what happens?

Hi Kunal

Yes, I would personally suggest trying to remove it, (if you can). Norton is known to be a system hog and there's been a few threads here discussing that. It could be hard to uninstall.

Read this thread and there's links to site with instructions for uninstalling Norton. You may have to manually do some work yourself.

There's also some talk in that thread about other antivirus software besides Norton.

Hi Allen, sorry was away for a few days. I followed the instructions to take every little piece of Norton/Symantec out of my system, and am still getting the Vegas memory error. Any other ideas?
