Convolution Kernel Issues in 6.0
by Charles Smith on Jul 21, 2008 at 6:57:23 pm

Client shot some footage that's pretty marginal and wants me to "jazz it up" with Sony filters. I've laid the video in the timeline and split it into working sections. Applied Convolution Kernal filter, applied edges and by golly it looks pretty kewl given the (unintentional) jerky hand-held / swish-pan-zooming of the novice cameraperson.

So I've tried to render it to .avi file but afterwards....all the neat-o looking "rave effects" video got rendered to just line-edges instead of the blurry colored edging I had seen in preview.

I go back to the timeline and preview and it's looking as I desired but another render to .avi makes it look with simple outlines on black, no color edging as in preview. Am I failing somewhere? Help... I really like this look in preview.

Set your preview window to Good (Full) to see what the output will really look like when rendered. Then tweak the FX to look the way you want at Good quality. I've seen big differences with some FX between preview quality and good quality.

Thanks for the tip. Bummer...when I change preview to GOOD...and play...it looks like it did when it renders...which isn't the cool look in preview.

I've been adjusting the controls on convolution kernal and can't replicate the look I get in preview....bummer cuz it looks really cool.

Sorry I don't have any advice at achieving what you saw in preview. The convolution kernel is difficult to work with and could use a much better interface than a mathematical matrix. :(

I agree....even a virtual joystick GUI would be better than entering numbers... while it has the "slide control" it leaves much to be desired.

I managed to get close to what I originally had...even with entering the right numbers, it still didn't quite look the same. Don't know why...guess the preview adds it's own spin on output.

Thanks again,

Chaz

"guess the preview adds it's own spin on output. "....
Not entirely true Charles,
If your output gives a different look than what you saw in the
preview, go back to the drawing board and be patient while you try other options, filters and tweaks to get that perfect render....
...especially, experiment with filters you never used before(that's how you learn).

In digital media content, there is more than one way to achieve a certain look or effect.
Lets know if you have success.
