HELP

I still cannot get Sony Vegas Pro 8 to open.

What I have done:
~ turned off DEP for Vegas
~ uninstalled Corel DVD Copy & entire Corel suite
~ reinstalled Sony Vegas
~ tried to open without being connected to the Internet

Any other ideas?

~ and, I can't do a restore point since I don't have one prior to removing Corel
~ Sony techs have e-mailed me 3 times having me try what I have already done above...still no luck

Boy...You have one major problem...but dont give up on vegas just yet.
First, Iam certain its something simple on your system thats
causing conflict with the vegas architecture and its audio engine.

Hence, just patiently tell me all the major applications you have installed on your system. Then most importantly clean up your registry,
and your system.Use this free cleaner..http://www.ccleaner.com/ to clean up your system in the meantime.

Also, what antivirus software are you using and do you have a firewall? I had Kerio Firewall at one time and it really messed with my Vegas. Now I use AVG's Internet security suite and never had a problem with AVG, even since AVG's free days.

Thats a very good suggestion Allen.
Cindy, if you are using a anti-virus (lets know which)...Hence, disable
your internet connection for a while, while you disable your antivirus and firewall, then launch vegas.
Indeed AVG is good and i also would recommend Mcafee which i have used
for years to date with no complications.

Hi have Norton...yes, I have turned it off and tried to launch Vegas and still did not work.

Sony just had me uninstall again, delete the sony folder, create a new user and install under the new user...that failed also.

Primary software programs I'm using: Adobe CS3 products, Ulead, Roxio, I-tunes

Hi
Sorry but you do have a problem and using Norton you have an even bigger problem. I personally think you're gong to have to uninstall Norton completely. Usually this may mean a manual uninstall because Norton is not only a system hog but it puts gargage everywhere on your machine. but try the uninstaller first.

My suggestion? Uninstall Norton. Do you have a registry cleaner? Use it. I use PC tools Registry Mechanic. Then bring up my computer, right click on your C drive, click properties and click disk cleanup. Let it do it's thing. Make sure you click okay to delete the files. Then when it's done restart your computer. Then my computer - right click on C drive again. On the upper tabs you'll see Tools. Click that and then defrag. That is unless you use a 3rd party defragger. I use Perfect Disk. Now all this assumes you don't use Vista. If you use Vista someone elst will have to help you because I don't know Vista. It may be the same as I'm suggesting here. If this is the first time you're defragging, be prepared for an all night affair. Just walk away and go watch TV. ha ha It may take a long time.

Now after all that if you feel you still want an anti virus right away, Google AVG Free Antivirus and get the freebie for now. Then engage your windows firewall for now. Then re-install Vegas.

I'm praying you're not going to have to re-format your hard drive but if this doesn't help, hmmmmm I don't know.

Good Luck

nortons have an uninstaller (cleaner) on their site. you really need to use this to guarantee getting rid of all nortons crap.

it might not solve your problem, but i'll bet it'll go along way towards sorting it out.

i have taken off nortons on about 8 clients computers (replaced with avast), and you'd think i was jesus raising the dead they were so happy.....

Why on earth is norton anti-virus is such a mess..it baffles me,
and yet its the first name that comes to peoples mind when the word anti-virus is mentioned.

Cindy..
iam really at a lost as to what is the root of your problem. Reformatting your hardrive may cure all ailments..but i dont
like recommending this..it is such a time consuming process.

Re: Vegas still won't open

Hi Steve

The Norton story as I understand and remember it goes like this. Back in DOS 3.2 and above days. Maybe earlier, Norton utilities was the greatest thing going since the desktop computer. We all relied on his various utilities and they were great.

Then he sold it to Symantec and that's when it started going downhill. Symantec started expanding it and for some reason it really became a system hog. I used it right up to the end of W98SE. I found my system getting slower and slower and everyone in the know, wound up having to re-format their HD's every year or so just to get all the crap out. I don't know the why's and wherefor's but I got tired of it along with everyone else I knew or came in contact with.

I found out about Nod32 from ESET, a little known foreign company and went with them and for years they were by far the very best. However due to some personal personal issues with ESET which I won't go into (it's still a very good antivirus) I started looking around and finally settled on AVG (then a popular free antivirus). Stayed with them for a long time but then was looking for a good software firewall to replace MS's first efforts ar a firewall. Couldn't find one that didn't conflict with one thing or another and when AVG came out with their Internet security suite, I bought a 3 pack license for all my computers and never look back.

Great thing about AVG is I can do anything, even render video with AVG in the background it it never messed up my computer or projects. I never have to disable it, even when installing new programs. It just doesn't conflict.

I got some personal thoughts about Symantec but I can't back them up with facts so I won't share them. Surfice it to say, I'd choose another AntiVirus software.

It may just be part or all of Cindy's problem.

Thanks for the insight Allen,
I agree, years ago it was really good and reliable then started gradually turning into a bloated mess...i didnt know all the details
about being sold to Symantec etc. just knew i got to really hate it.
I am really puzzled as to why they had to turn this former gem
into a bloated monster.

I however then gave Mcafee a spin and never looked back...it doesn't
conflict with anything...nor slows down system resources or anything like that, just beautiful integration all around. I also used AVG and also can vouch for it.

I am somewhat positive that its responsible for Cindy's problem..
and probably occurred immediately after it was automatically updated
online in the background.

I did try some of what you suggested, but Vegas still won't open.

Two things:
~ Vegas worked prior to loading Corel products
~ I had installed some Codec pack - but I can't find where it's installed at

I know lots of people of "issues" with Norton, I never have...and, I don't think it's the problem for the "initializing audio engine" where Vegas hangs up when loading.

Also, someone had asked about the OS I'm using and it's Vista, which again, I've never had a problem using, just a little learning curve at first.

I finally got Vegas 8.0b working on my x64 laptop (running Vista) by disabling DEP for it in system prefs. Everything else (SF, DVDSTPRO, ACID,) all worked fine without having to take this step. I use Vegas more than the other Sony Apps, so it was good to get it working again.

Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM
Octocore 8 GB Ram, Radeon card, MBP, MXO
Windows XP Adobe Studio CS3, Vegas 8.0, Lightwave 9.2, Sound Forge 9, Acid Pro 6, Continuum 5, Boris Red 4, Combustion 2008, Sapphire Effects

Disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

i wish i could be of more help - i'm still running xp on all my machines.

just to reiterate what my steps would be (and testing to see whether vegas opened after each one of them):

a. uninstall nortons using
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
(i'd do this EVEN if vegas was running!)

b. uninstall everything connected with corel - there's been some mention of problems with corel over on the sony forum as well. how you do a clean uninstall of this product i don't know?

c. disable DEP

d. run your favourite reg cleaner.

e. uninstall then re-install vegas, just to make sure....

other than that, i don't know.

good luck

leslie

Hi Cindy
Hang in there, we'll get your vegas running yet! Hopefully ;-)))

Anyway sorry but I don't know anything about Vista, however in reference to the Corel stuff, I'm sure in your control panel - add/remove programs, there's got to be a reference to Corel and the Codec.

You do have a control panel and an add/remove programs folder don't you? No I'm not being funny, I just don't know Vista.

As a last resort, you might consider using your recovery disk and start all over, installing Vegas first and staying away from Corel until you know for sure it won't conflict with Vegas.

Re: Vegas still won't open

Yes, in Vista you can Add/Remove programs...it's just now under "Programs" in control panel.

Vista has everything found in XP...but sometimes options are just moved or named differently (which can be confusing, thank goodness there's a search tab).

I have searched for the Codec program I installed but I don't see it under add/remove programs, which may be one of my problems.

My other issue is I don't really want to uninstalled Ulead, since I use both Vegas & Ulead 11.5 plus depending on the type of video project I'm working with. I did, however, uninstall, Corel PaintShop Pro 2 which is what I believe to have caused Vegas to not work. Ulead is now part of the Corel family, just separte from PaintShop. Life can be so confusing - I should have just stayed with a Mac :)

Re: Vegas still won't open

Hi Cindy

Ha! I just bought a MacBook Pro to replace my old 9lb Toshiba Laptop. Mac's wonderful now and with BootCamp I'll install XP and all my Sony Vegas stuff.

So back to your problem. You use Ulead? ugh! (personal opinion). Uninstalling any graphic or video sofware shouldn't delete your files if you stored them outside of program's folder. I never file anything within any program's folder. And lately I've been using the Documents folder for everything which I never used to do. All my VEG files are in a Sony VEG folder and vids are on another HD.

You're at the point now just to get the recovery disk out and run it, or start uninstalling everything until you see if Vegas Opens. Since the last stuff you installed was from Corel, Take it all out. Try Vegas and go on from there.

Do you have a registry cleaner program for your Vista? Something may be lurkig in the registry. Usually a registry cleaner will find old 'crap' and clean it out. I use PC Tools Registry Mechanic and on another computer I have Amust registry cleaner.
http://www.amustsoft.com/
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/

Don't follow any links you may get in various spam email for registry cleaners either.

Uh, what verson of Vegas are you using? 8b? If it's not the latest version do an upgrade and that just may solve the problem forcing Vegas to open. Another thought;-)

Re: Vegas still won't open

Well Cindy..for basic registry cleaning, you can try the cleaner
i recommended earlier in this post (ccleaner).
Install it, then open..then at left you see a button name registry, press it, and then back on the bottom right you see 'scan for issues'
press that...and when its completed you then press 'fix selected issues'(all issues must be ticked)...then click 'fix all selected issues' then when its done click 'ok', thats it.

I highly recommend this software and method because it is simple and effective without the risks of damaging your registry and removing components that's important to windows, which sometimes happen using
too powerful registry cleaning software.

Hey Steve,

Just installed and ran the CCleaner; however, Vegas still did not load. It is still hanging on "Initializing Audio Engine"

Then, I tried clicking on DVD Architect, and I am now geting a message that an error has occurred.

What do you recommend at this point?

Vista is giving you no end to your problems....(Personally I would revert to XP)...I dont and will not use Vista on my editing bay-PC, But i assume you are not prepared to go that route.

Hence my recommendation is to clean(reformat)your hard drive and reinstall all your applications nice and fresh...(seems your problems will only increase if you continue this route).

Re: Vegas still won't open

Hi Cindy

I just re-read your first thread on this subject from July 1st. Something to remember. Always create a restore point before instaling something, (anything) so you'll have a good place to go back to if the install either messes with Vegas or if something goes wrong with the install.

You can then go back to that restore point and get rid of everything that was changed after you created the restore point.

So, as Steve and I both suggested, re-format your HD and start over with the recovery disk.

I'm having the same problem on my laptop for over a month. I've done all the suggestions on at the Sony site. I use XP media center. I'm reading this thread with great interest. I'm at the point of formating and starting over, also. But, procrastinating from beginning that chore. Would love to find out it's something simple. I have Norton Internet Security. Paint Shop Pro X has been on the laptop for 2 years. I've tried the registry cleaner also (advanced registry optimizer).

Hi Jason

[Jason Boone] "I have Norton Internet Security. Paint Shop Pro X"

I'd personally dump the Norton and Paint Shop Pro 10 I believe is Corel.

I still use PSP 8 just before it was sold to Corel. hmmmm Are we seeing a trend here? ;-) (Norton and Corel)?

I'm so happy I just got a MacBook Pro. Only thing running on the XP side will be Vegas-DVDA-Cinescore-Sound Forge and SonicFire Pro. ha ha
