Hey guys...
New here and need some help....I want to export my Vegas file as a QuickTime file.....how do I do this? And if I can't do it direct, is there any way to turn a Vegas file into a QT file???

Allen,
In essence, I want the file to become a MOV....because I want to ultimately be able to open it in AVID. And I'm not sure a Vegas file will open in AVID, but I know a MOV file will.
For instance, in AVID, when I export the file, it becomes a MOV file. Is there an option, or anything similar in Vegas, so when I export in Vegas, the file becomes a MOV, or something that will open in AVID...

.mov is just a container. Think of it like a brown paper bag. it can contain files made with several different codecs. Not all MOV files will open in Avid or FCP, just like all .mov files will not open in Vegas.
Very easy to convert to various QT formats in Vegas, you'll just need to create a render template for the format you need, if there isn't one already available.

If his desktop is cluttered with icons, he might not be seeing the file.
My suggestion is to have him render it to a brand new folder somewhere other than the desktop.
That way, if it's not in that folder after rendering, he's doing something wrong.

OK,
So here's the latest....We've got him saving to the desktop, etc...we can find the files, etc...no problem...we have the rendering down...
THE ISSUE NOW IS.....
It can't render a file that's over 1 MINUTE!! I'm using remote access to watch his computer screen...and every time a 5-6 minute file gets 70-80% done...it stops and gives an error reading....saying simply that it can't finish the project, or giving an error that says "make sure you have enough disk space."....
I checked on his hard drive....there's 16.5 GB left...which should be plenty....
SO WHAT'S THE ISSUE!!! Why can't I render a file that's longer than that???? One thing I've been doing when I have him render is...
Edit > Select All > File > Render AS > etc, etc....putting it on the desktop....
Do I not need to do the Edit, Select All...stuff...although I don't think that makes a difference...
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK!!! You've been helpful so far.

First of all, rendering on a system drive is never a good thing to do.
Hard drives are so cheap these days that 2 is the recommended minimum for editing.
Leave drive C for the OS and all programs and put all your video assets on the second drive.
If he has access to an external drive, plug it in and transfer all the project material to this new drive.
Render to this drive as well.
Does he only have a drive C on his machine?
If yes, how big is it?
It could be that, even though there's 16.5 GB left, that's not enough for all the temp files, etc. that are created during a render.
Start going through and clearing out all the various Temp folders that Vegas has created.
For example, the bottom of the Options > Prefs screen will give you the location of one of them.
File > Properties > Video and File > Properties > Audio will give you two more Temp folder locations.
Clear all these out.
Make sure to disable any unnecessary programs such as the Internet and anti-virus during the render.
Lastly, if he's using Norton Utilities, make sure to empty the Recycle bin as it has a nasty habit of hanging onto files long after you think they're gone.

You guys are great. I was beating myself up for two days trying to render an .avi file to a QT Video. Tried everything. Your suggestion to clean out the temp folders nailed it.
Thanks!
