How to Get Rid of Extra Frames in Vegas Rendering?
by David Ciavarella on Jun 26, 2008 at 9:20:46 pm

I wasn't sure exactly what this is called, so I was a bit confused as to what to search for...

Basically, for all the stuff I do I keep it at 24 fps when I can, because I'm big on film, etc. and 24 fps really appeals to me.

The problem is when I render something as an .avi or .wmv at the preview level, there are large horizontal lines that appear as a result of the low quality level at which I'm rendering. But when I up the quality, the program tries to smooth things out by adding in extra "ghost" frames that are partially transparent.

Is there a way to get rid of these "ghost" frames? I would really like to keep the stuff I do as hard/sharp as possible, and I feel like these frames take away from it a bit.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Since you are big on film David,
Let me highly recommend "DVFILM MAKER" over at dvfilm.com
This small application is absolutely incredible at producing
excellent film motion and integrates well with vegas, so you really dont need to struggle with frame rates in vegas etc.

My format is 720X360 NTSC DV and the 24p is coming from the rendering of it in Vegas. I will try out this program that was linked, seems to be what I was looking for, though more information is still very welcomed. Thanks

I saw this program is like 150 bucks (ouch). If there are other fixes out there I would like to give them a try beforehand

Thanks again

Trust me David, its worth every penny. It makes your video appear
as it was shot on film giving you that expensive look..you can
make back that money in no time and blow away your client...who would certainly spread the word.
There is a demo available on the site..download it and witness the
miracle. The demo functions exactly like the full version except for
a watermark. You can even link it to vegas to function within vegas and the timeline.
sorry...cant recommend any other to try, this is the best.
Only Magic bullet Frames comes close, and that is only available as a
plugin for after effects etc.

Since you are generating this 24p from footage that is not 24p, you might want to look at VASST Celluloid Film Looks. For $24.95 it will correctly render your footage to 24p, set up your project correctly to work in 24p, and give you a nice collection of popular color grading film looks to work with. There is a 15-day free trial to see if you like it before you buy it. You can also add more Film Looks (called ReelPaks) later. In the interest of full disclosure I work at VASST so don't just take my word for it... download the product and see for yourself.

As I said in my previous post, I believe the "ghost" frames you are seeing are pulldown frames. If you render to DV AVI you will never get rid of this because NTSC DV AVI does not support 24p without adding pulldown to keep the frame rate at 29.970. WMV should not give you this problem if you customize the settings to use a framerate of 23.976. Otherwise the default WMV template will add the same pulldown frames.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you are seeing but since you said you work in 24p I'm wondering if these are pulldown frames that you are referring to? When you work in 24p you want to set your project to 24p and make sure your footage is 24p and that you render to 24p without pulldown. Then you will only get the frames that you originally shot; unless, of course, the camera you used added pulldown to make 24p into 60i when it recorded it.

So I guess the question are:

Where does your 24p source come from? What camera/format?

Have you set your project to 24p in Vegas? Which template?

Are you rendering to 24p? Which rendering template?
