Exporting sound timelines for remixing in Pro Tools?
by Alvin Hosk on Jun 2, 2008 at 9:03:04 am

I have a feature-length project, and I'd like to export the sound timelines EXACTLY AS THEY ARRANGED IN VEGAS for remixing in Pro Tools.

I will then give these files, arranged in these timelines, to a gentlemen who will remix them professionally.

This guy is accustomed to getting this from users of Final Cut. He says in Final Cut there is an option to export them directly into this format.

I don't see anything like this in Vegas. Is there a way to export only the sound files and have them associated with a timeline file which, when opened in Pro Tools, will retain the spacing, sound levels, and all settings that I have set in Vegas?

Thanks so much in advance. If I am not clear enough in my question please let me know and I will try to clarify.

I don't believe Vegas will export as OMF yet. That's what Protools users normally ask for. Vegas used to be just audio on Vegas 1 and 2 I believe. It supports direct-x and vst pluggins. If It has to be done in PT, You can render each track out at the same lenth and he can import them to tracks at the beginning of the time line and retain your timing. You won't have any level, panning or effect settings but Isn't that what he's wanting to do with PT? Danny Hays

Danny,

First, let me heartily welcome you aboard as a leader. Since you probably can wrangle Vegas 10-100 times better than I do, I hope that you'll forgive the nature of our first interaction here, but I just couldn't let this stand for Alvin's sake.

[Danny Hays] "I don't believe Vegas will export as OMF yet."

Yes it will, and very nicely indeed, since at least Vegas 7. I'll be no help at all in helping anyone accomplish this, but the directions should be in the help files, or perhaps someone with direct experience can help.

The reason I know this is that I'm a good friend with the most amazing technical editor I've ever encountered. He's a Vegas expert, an Adobe Expert, an Avid expert, along with 3 or 4 other dead NLEs, and because he's being forced to it by circumstances will soon be an FCP expert. Most of us couldn't begin to do that, or at least I know I couldn't.

A bit over a year ago when he was regularly off-lining and audio editing with Vegas and then AAFing to the Adobe software on an Axio system for some finishing and client review, he ran into a huge hassle. BTW, the Vegas software coexisted quite well on the Axio computer, so this was all on the same workstation. He was given some Digibeta tapes with 8 channel audio to do further video finishing on Axio, with audio finishing in ProTools at another facility. Maybe it has changed since, but at that time PPro couldn't handle more than 4 channels of SDI embedded audio, it just wasn't part of the software, a nutty non-pro situation. So he captured the Digibeta in Vegas with all 8 audio channels and used the Vegas OMF export and import to go back and forth to ProTools without problem. The resulting finished audio was then AAFed from Vegas to Axio/PPro for final assembly.

Most Vegas users have no use for OMF or AAF, because they are used in the more advanced levels of the industry that we don't often encounter, but here's another little known fact. Apparently the AAF import/export modules for both Vegas and Premiere Pro were developed by the same 2nd party developer, and AAF I/O is quite solid between the two apps. When moving projects between the Vegas and PPro via AAF most everything translates without the intervention of an expensive 3rd party app like Automatic Duck, which is used primarily to pass projects around between FCP and Avid.

I hope that a few here find this kind of esoteric stuff interesting because if you want to interact with the larger and more powerful forces in this industry it pays to understand the problems, potential solutions, and where things are heading because a lot of it won't be esoteric too much longer. It's not esoteric to Alvin right now.

Hi Ron,
This wouldn't be the 1st time I've been corrected and it's totally cool,, Thats what these forums are for. Finding answers. For the life of me I can't find how to export, save as, an OMF file. Upon further research I found this program that is supposed to convert EDL to omf.
http://www.edlmax.com/edlmaxpro.htm
Also I found that Digidesign has something called Digitranslator that supposed to allow PT to import AAf files. Alvin, Ask your PT guy if he has Digitranslator or if he can import EDL or AAF files.
If there's a way to get from Vegas to Protools, lets find it. I'm sure Alvin's not the only one wanting this ability. Danny Hays

Hmmm! I can't find it either, so you may very well have been right and I got the story wrong. Like you I wonder if AAF would work well enough for audio. If I screwed up, I'll sort it out. Now I don't know what to think of my memory, but I'm almost positive he got the audio into ProTools and back without problem, but I thought it was OMF. I'll ask.

Hang on Alvin,
