Audio in Capture 6 but not Vegas 8

Recently downloaded trial version of Sony Vegas 8. Captured a short video clip from a Panasonic PV-GS35 MiniDV using Capture 6.0 that is part of Vegas 8. If I view the (.avi) clip in Capture, it plays fine. But if I play it in Vegas, there is no audio. No audio after rendering either.
I read the forums, and downloaded GSpot. For audio codec it says PCM Audio, no codec required. For video it says dvsd, codec(s) are installed.
Have checked the obvious: speakers are on, no sound/volume settings are muted.
Am wondering if I'm missing anything obvious, as a new user. Haven't seen this problem when Googling etc. even with the trial version. Can't bring myself to buy it until I can resolve this!
If it matters: My system is a bit old but meets the requirements. I have 1gb RAM, it's a Pentium 4, tons of hard drive space. Have successfully used ULead before etc.

Ugh. I used Mini B to USB, which I think I used successfully in other programs. Realize that is irrelevant. Used it because neither my PC (older) nor my wife's (brand new) has firewire ports. If that's the only way, I'll look for adaptors. Still confuses me why I can play the video with audio in Capture 6.0.

USB reassigns resources on a whim. This is why 1394/Firewire/iLink is the ONLY supported capture mechanism other than SDI.
USB is simply not reliable, nor is it specifically controlled separate from the CPU.
