What do you recommend as an 500 G external hard drive on which to store media and have Vegas access it for editing? My Maxtor Onetouches no longer work well with Vegas. I suspect they don't run fast enough, although they are rated at 7200 rpm.

I've been buying Seagate Barracudas and am very happy with them.
The 5 year warranty is a bonus.

I would get this and buy an external eSata case for it with good fans.

However, I would recommend utilizing internal drives for editing and then store it on the externals.

With a notebook, can't install an internal hard drive.

Rick I have been using a Western Digital MyBook essential (USB only) external drive for a Vegas project for about a month now. I have Vegas installed on two computers and carry the drive back and forth between them. No problems at all. I got it for $99 at Staples when it was on sale.

Thanks! You can still get that hard drive for $99.99 at Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/55yone. I think I'll go for it. It's half the price of the La Cie d2 that a Mac friend recommends. For $200 I can get two of them, which gives me quick and easy backup, so essential to peace of mind and general well being.

That's the one. They come preformatted with FAT32 file format so they can work on Win and Mac. If you're using Windows and you want to put files bigger than 4gb on them you have to reformat to NTFS file format. Instructions for that are included in the box.

I have the same WD MyBook Essential Edition 2.0 500GB connected via USB 2 - Haven't noticed any problems in rendering HDV (m2t) on the external drive and writting it back to tape.

I also use the WD 500 Gig via USB 2.0. They work great. One is a year old, and one is 6months old.

I had a Lacie, and it crashed once, got it repaired, then after 6 months, it wouldn't turn on.

Seagate Barracuda sounds good though too, I was unaware it had a 5yr warranty....
