What do you recommend as an 500 G external hard drive on which to store media and have Vegas access it for editing? My Maxtor Onetouches no longer work well with Vegas. I suspect they don't run fast enough, although they are rated at 7200 rpm.

Rick I have been using a Western Digital MyBook essential (USB only) external drive for a Vegas project for about a month now. I have Vegas installed on two computers and carry the drive back and forth between them. No problems at all. I got it for $99 at Staples when it was on sale.

Thanks! You can still get that hard drive for $99.99 at Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/55yone. I think I'll go for it. It's half the price of the La Cie d2 that a Mac friend recommends. For $200 I can get two of them, which gives me quick and easy backup, so essential to peace of mind and general well being.

That's the one. They come preformatted with FAT32 file format so they can work on Win and Mac. If you're using Windows and you want to put files bigger than 4gb on them you have to reformat to NTFS file format. Instructions for that are included in the box.

I have the same WD MyBook Essential Edition 2.0 500GB connected via USB 2 - Haven't noticed any problems in rendering HDV (m2t) on the external drive and writting it back to tape.
