Vegas 7 Rendering Problem (process freezes)
by Jan Henckel on May 15, 2008 at 10:03:01 am

Okay I've a 1.5h video with lots of source materials in different formats (mpeg, mov, avi), different transitions (but mostly fades), several effects (most of them are color corrections) and about 45 mp3's.
It is completly in half-hd (720p) and has 5.1 sound.
I did the whole Project in my free time so it took me about 3/4 of a year.
Now when im trying to render the process freezes and only the estimated time increases.
I tried rendering on three different computers:
- vista x64, core2quad, 8gig ram
- the same pc with xp x86, which results in 3.3 gig ram
- xp x86, amd athlon 2800+, 1.5gig ram

I tried rendering in many different formats including

- mpeg 2
- mpeg 4
- avi (divx, xvid, cinepack-whatever)
- and even wmv

every format stoped rendering at about 35 frames.

Now, I totally ran out of ideas and the movie should be rendered by friday evening.

greetings, Jan

If it stops at around frame 35 see what you have there. Is it a different file format? A certain effect? A new mp3 file?

Try this: Draw a selection around a 15 minute segment starting after frame 35. Render to uncompressed AVI if you have the disc space. If it does indeed finish encoding, do the rest of your movie in 15 minute increments and place the pieces back on the timeline and render out to 720p from the uncompressed avi's. See if that works.

there is no special event at frame 35, although it does not stop exactly at frame 35 but somewhere between frame 30 and 40 depending an the format used. I tried to render into an ipod sized mp4 file, that way I made it up to frame 190 or so.
If I start rendering at frame 40 rendering stops somewhere between frame 70 and 80.
And yes, I thought about rendering 35 frames-parts... but this would result in about 6000 single parts. And i'm not bored enough to render them all!

In my opinion it has to be something with the avaible ram but since I tried rendering on 3 (now 4) different computers this seems not very plausible

Try a couple of changes in the preferences:

1. Change the number of rendering threads to 1.
2. Reduce the ram preview amount (you could try 0 but I'd try a very small number first like 16).
