IMac for Vegas? PC?
by Rick Wise on May 9, 2008 at 7:58:56 pm

I am about to upgrade to a more powerful computer so I can edit HDV in Vegas 8. Does anyone have a happy experience doing that with a new iMac and Boot Camp? If so, what configuration do you recommend?

Equally, if I stay in PC land, what minimum configuration would you recommend in order to edit HDV in "good" mode? I suspect that for around $1,200-$1,500 I can get a good PC that rivals the $2,500 iMac -- assuming I need one that powerful.

I am using a Macpro laptop (2GHz, Dual Core, 2Gb memory, 80 GB internal hardrive, about 2 years old), with BootCamp. Running Vista home and Vegas 8b.
Vegas runs amazingly fast.
On an performance test the Mac/PC runs faster than a 5000+ AMD dual core desktop.

Of course I do my regular and almost all work on Vegas, but when I want show off to the Panasonic/FCP crowd I run FCP on the Mac Laptop.

Did you encounter any difficulty setting up Windows and Vegas 8 on your Mac? I notice that the Sony site specifically states it offers NO support for Mac users. Possibly because they sell PCs, or possibly because there are problems they don't want to deal with.

My two cents...

I would say it would really help if you know your way around the operating systems. I found all this quite difficult.

I am on my second windows partition on my Mac Book Pro laptop. The first one had to be deleted because I inadvertently messed up the windows system files. So, I had to recreate the partition and reinstall Windows (XP with SP3), and all my Sony and Adobe applications, which took several tries. First problem I had was no sound. After much research, this turned out to be caused by some problem with SP3 for Windows XP. The fix for it worked. Now I am having a problem with Sound Forge not "rendering" files, although the same audio files will render from Vegas.

I am an experienced Vegas user, and I really need both Mac and PC, and I only want to have one computer. I'm willing to put up with the issues of running Windows on the Mac, but I can't pretend there aren't issues. I bought VMWare Fusion so I could switch from Mac to Windows without rebooting, but found some Windows apps I want to use only work on reboot due to some DirectX issues.

Good luck to you.

Thank you very much, Mary. As I suspected, all is not simple and easy, running Vegas on a Mac. For now, I've decided to forget this idea.

I haven't read the entire thread but will say that I have zero issue running Vegas 7/8 on an older MacBook Pro with Bootcamp. Parallels won't work, but it's of little consequence to me.

I am running VMWare on my macbook pro. Vegas runs just fine on it under windows. VMware installed real easy and Vegas installed just like on a windows machine. I cranked up the horsepower avaiable to Windows (number of cpu's and memory) and I am very happy with it.
