...about to buy the new Sony PMW-EX1 I've heard about "not so great looking SD-DVDs from the Vegas workflow" ...is it true ?? ..I've done excelent looking DVDs from my JVC-HD110 (from HDV)...is there something missing with the new Sony camera ??
just want to hear any updates & recomendations on this please ... (I do not want "lower" quality DVDs from my new camera..)
No, it's not true. There are those that don't understand how to properly setup a project and output it. *if* you output 4:3 from the widescreen, you may find yourself less than happy with the resample, but there are ways around that tiger, too. Extremely happy with the EX1 camcorders, we have four now, and of course use them in Vegas.

When we got our first EX1 I did some testing and rendered out a dvd with the 16:9 and a 4:3 crop to compare to 4:3 footage we shot at the same event (although not at the exact same time and angle) with our sony DSR-300. Once its all downconverted to mpeg2 I can't tell much of a difference. It's nice having the ability to zoom in on hd footage after the fact, but I'm really just waiting for writable blurays to come down in price, because shooting HD only to dump it down to dvd is a real shame. Although you won't hear me complain about not having to carry 25 pounds of camera on my shoulder all day.

thank you so much ...
I suppose the basic workflow to SD-DVD in Vegas would be:
1.- Ingest or "capture" HD clips (donīt know right exactly how right now about this, until I have the camera) maybe just copy the clips from the camera or card, or maybe using some Sony transfer-software or even Cineform...
2.- Edit with an HD timeline in Vegas 8 (as working with HDV)
3.- Render video in Vegas to mpeg2, DVD architect NTSC widescreen template ???

Yes its exactly that simple. To import the ex1 footage you use Sony's Clipbrowser software to convert (to MXF) & transfer the clips off the camera to a local drive. For some reason the version of ClipBrowser on the cd that came with our EX1 was pretty useless and could only view the clips. Make sure you have the latest version from Sony's website to be able to convert the clips to MXF, then just drag the files into an hd timeline in whatever format you shot the footage in. The footage takes time to transfer off the camera, but its a heck of a lot faster than digitizing in real time from tapes.
