Audio capture, is this the best way?
by Kent Clark on Apr 26, 2008 at 1:24:25 pm

My 8mm film transfer project has no sound. Rather than add music I'm thinking of doing the following:

1. Make DVDs of the captures
2. Point my minidv camcorder at the TV screen at my mother's house
3. Start the DVD and the camcorder and have my mom comment, narrate what she sees, name people, add details
4. Take the audio track from that session and add it as the audio track on the captured film
5. Repeat procedure on later captures with brothers and sisters

Is using the camcorder the best way to record the audio?

Since I'm not saving the video portion and since it is just talking and not high dynamic range music, would there be a quality problem with reusing the minidv tapes instead of using a new tape for each audio capture session?

As always, thanks for the incredible help and information that everyone gives so freely.

Kent,

If your dvcam has a mic input and you will be using an external microphone your audio will be just fine. However, I would steer away from using the built in mic on the camcorder. Your built in mic will pick up the motor noise of your camera, and will hear a lot of the room making it sound hollow.

That being said, if you have no other options but to use the bulit in mic, place it no further than two feet from the person narrating as to reduce the hollow room sound.

As far as reusing your dv tape for audio recording (no problem).

Do you have an audio interface. If so, use a good mic and record directlt into vegas. Danny

Danny, I hadn't considered the direct recording. My mom is 82 and it will probably be easier to take a dvd to her than to get her over to my house but I'll have to see what's possible. Unfortunately I don't have a laptop that I could take with me. Thanks for replying.
