Question about sound recording

I can record external sound (Through M-Audio) into Vegas but I am unable to record internal computer sounds such as the ones generated by error messages in Windows or from other programs such as Symphonic Choirs. Do I need to go through MIDI yokes or is there a different setting that will record such sounds directly into Vegas 8?

Yes, sound. But I do not want to drop the entire sound file in Vegas. All I want to do is record internal computer sounds (fragments of files) or record files from sounds coming through the computer speakers. In other words I would like to be able to push the circle (record button) anytime there is an interesting sound and be able to capture it in Vegas. I have tried the MIDI-in (MIDI Yokes) without success.

All the windows sounds are on your computer. Why not just import the ones you want directly into Vegas instead of recording them? I'm not at a Windows XP computer but windows 2000 stores them in your C:winntmedia folder. If thats not the case for XP, just do a search for Tada.wav and see where they are on your computer. In order to record from windows or another program into Vegas, you will need a Virtual audio cable program like Directconnect or similar program. Danny

Thanks for the reply:
I mentioned Windows sounds as an example but really what I am after is creating sampling of different sounds in Vegas.
Is that possible? I was thinking of combinations of sounds from different sources: MIDI, CD's, instruments etc.
The main problem I am having is that some program that generate sounds do not work with Vegas. However they play through the computer speakers just fine.
I looked up directconnect but it seems like there are different products and different companies. Were you referring to any program specifically?
Is there a different way other than running a microphone in front of the speakers and have Vegas record it?

If you take a cable from the line out, not speaker out and connect to line in, not mic in and turn off direct monitoring and or turn down the volume on the channel your recording, it should work. Danny

Yes, green is usualy headphones which can be too loud to record from as that output can drive the speakers in your headphones. Idealy you want a line out and a line in. The mic and headphones jacks your card probably has can possibly work but make sure you start with the record levels and master out on your windows mixer down to prevent squealing feedback. Your connecting an output to an input here. The direct monitoring button is in Vegas, right of the solo and mute buttons,, it has some Greater than signs in it. It allows whats coming in to pass thru to the outputs causing the feedback. A virtual audio cable program would be much better. Here's a link to checkout. There's a trial version to try too. The full version is 30$ I think for one machine.

Hello again.
I tried downloading the free version but it wouldn't allow me to do much. I ended up paying about $30.00 FOR THE FULL VERSION. It seems to have installed fine on my computer, however, I am still not able to do what I had in mind.
For example, if you go to control panel and click on voice or sound, gives you options for recording. If you go to Vegas it also gives options such as MIDI, Yoke 1-16, Virtual cable, sound card, Microsoft Wave and Microsoft Synth...
I have several programs that generate sound. One of them is Voices of Passion (Eastwest) and Symphonic Choirs). They usually play through the computer speakers fine but if I am playing them they do not recoord into Vegas. It gets more difficult since sometimes I play them through a MIDI external keyboard.
I have tried multiple settings combinations at no avail.

In the program you want to record out of, select virtual cable for your output. In the program you want to record into select virtual cable. In a program that doesnt have the ability to select and in or out, they usualy use what windows is using. set it to virtual cable in control panel/ audio. Vegas does let you select ins and outs but you may need to able them if they dont show up. Do this in the preferences audio devices. Danny
