Cineform or Gearshift?????
by Terry Esslinger on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:21:31 pm

Just sticking my toe in the water with HD.
I have an FX1 which records HDV.
I have a dual core 2.4 GHz 2 G memory with 2 500G external HD (one for video files and one for rendered files).
Have never captured HD before (lots of SD) Apparently I need to render the m2s(?) files that Vegas will capture from the FX1 into intermediaries. Right? Apparently both Cineform (in some form) and Gearshift will do that. Right? Which one should I be looking at. I am not making Sundance Festival material here! Need a little help wrapping my 65 yr old mind around this HD stuff.

at 60 it wasn't easy either....

why? i edit the raw m2t's in vegas - true, most of my work is doco, so little is needed in fx's, though i do occasionally cc when necessary. 3 > 5 audio tracks, etc.,

never had any problems e6600/2gb/2 x 360mb.

It sounds like your machine can edit the m2t format without converting. But if your planning to chroma key or need to re-render the video more than once I would convert to Cineform avi. The color space is 4.2.2 with cineform as compared to 4.2.0 with m2t. this makes for better chroma keying and less loss with multiple renders. Danny
