this is a question we're talkin' about in school, which works out nicely cuz I've been curious!! what's the difference and why would one choose one over the others?

That's not a bad article Janet but a few of the details are incorrect.
IMO, Wikipedia has (from a technical standpoint) much better articles.
MPEG-1
MPEG-2
MPEG-4
