HD Capture Stream
by Steve Meinhardt on Mar 7, 2008 at 9:34:04 pm

Hello All,
First time post here.

Question: Capture HD video from camcorder with firewire or USB2 and "not" a BlackMagic card?
Question: If possible what camera do you recommend <$2k?

I'm also concerned that the video will be timed/aligned with audio.

I have Sony Vegas Pro 8 and recording 8 tracks/channels of audio via PresonusFireStudio/ASIO drivers into Vegas and that works great. I have a Sony HDR-SR1 that doesn't have any stream out except HDMI so I think I need a different camera. I know I could just add a black magic card to a PC and capture the full HDMI stream but I would rather use my laptop(no room for blackmagic card) and/or put the money toward a new cam and one with high res.

Thanks to everyone,
-Steve

You'll need a second firewire card if you want to capture a live stream of HDV.
You could *try* to capture with a BMD Intensity, but I'm almost certain it would fail, with the Presonus also running, even on a desktop, let alone a laptop.
Uncompressed and laptops, plus 8 channels of incoming audio would be a challenge for even the mightiest CPU's on a laptp.

Do you have a recommendation for a good HD camcorder with direct firewire out for less than $2k?

Thanks,

Pretty well all of them, IMO.
Canon has a couple of palm-corders, as does Sony. I have about 10 of the smaller Sony's, and use them rigorously and religiously. They're small tanks. I don't use the Canon due to their image stabilization system.
Sony V1's can be had used for around 2K as well, so can the FX1.

Good info. If I use the firewire2 for high def will Sony Vegas capture video and audio live and be sync'd together?

Example:
mic1->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic2->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic3->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic4->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic5->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic6->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic7->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
mic8->PresonusFS->firewire1->ASIOdriver->SonyVegas
Camcorder->firewire2->SonyVegas

Thanks,
-Steve

Interesting question, and I'm fairly sure the answer is "Yes."
I've had the capture window open capturing video while I had a second instance of Vegas open using an Indigo sound card to capture audio, so not having the exact gear with which to achieve this, I'd be reluctant to say "Absolutely, go for it."
But I'm inclined to believe it will work, based on past experiences, *IF* you have two 1394 cards.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

I'm not finding much in the way of Sony FX1 or V1 for 2k. Can you recommend a refurb shop or where I can find a decent camera?

I'm not doing this for a living so I "think" I would only need a consumer model.

Thanks,

I have a Sony HVR-A1U and it great.It's a cmos sensor camera and not a 3 ccd so it doesn'y capture very well in low light but other than that it looks fabulous. You can find them for about 1,700 on several price searches but beware of sellers that open the boxes and sell just the camera without all the needed accesories that normally come with it and then try to sell them to you for more money. There's a few sellers that sell the full, unopened box.
