trying to get 24f film look but not quite there
by Jeff Bellantine on Jan 27, 2008 at 9:53:33 pm

Ok, I've read over the threads here and elsewhere and am still getting a "camcorder" look to my project. Here is what I have so far, shot on an FX-1 with Sony HDV tapes camera set on HDV. Imported to Vegas at 29.97f. Cut scenes into separate projects at 29.97f. Rendered them to 24f, .avi. Opened the final project and set as 24f and dragged in the .avi scenes. Rendered the final project as an MPEG2/24f Arch setting. Brought it into Architect and burned onto a DVD. I understand this process isn't going to provide a real film look but it looks almost identical to the 29.97f version I burned on a test DVD. I wanted to watch them back to back to see the difference but I have to be doing something wrong. I even followed an outline on the web to add the color curve option to the entire project.
I know there is a filter for film grain but when I've tested that it is very grainy and looks a little too much. Am I wrong with that assumption?
If anyone sees something I am leaving out or has any suggestions please let me know. I am trying to finish this for a submission to a festival this coming week. This will be played on a large screen and I would like it to look it's very best. Thanks!

There are some VEG file templates out there that give a very smoothed ,washed film look. They use a combintion of settings already in Vegas to get a smooth filic look. The 24p frame rate will help with cadence but doesnt do much for a telecine (filmlike) look.
There is a free "movie-looks" plugin that is running around that has a menu of different styles from different eras that looks quite nice. It takes forever to render but the result is pretty creamy.
sorry I dont have the direct links but many others do on this forum
do a new post for them and you will get results.
I'm pleased with the filmic look we have achieved here.
