Sony Vegas not accepting .avi files

I wanted to make a video incorporating several parts of videos I have, but for some reason Sony Vegas 8.0 doesn't accept the files.
It will import them, but instantly, and when I went into trimmer, it says media is offline, which leads me to believe its not registering there is anything within the file.
I also cannot drag them to the timeline.
This happens with all my .avi files.
Is there anyway to fix this?

Hm... Didn't know there was more than one kind.
Says the Video Codec is mpeg-4asp and the Audio Codec is mp3,
Audio Format is mpeg layer-3
Video Compression is DvGigaAVICodec...
...
I'm not really good with computer terminology, so I hope that was the information you were looking for.
I did find a way around my problem, by converting my files to .mpegs, but if you could help figure out a way to use the files and not have to convert them, that'd be great.
Thanks again for your time.

Hm. Well its a show I downloaded online, so if I had to choose one of those 3 I guess it would be off-air signal. But if theres other options I'm guessing it's not one of the above.
