A little help
by Sebastian Alvarez on Dec 26, 2007 at 4:56:02 pm

Sorry to post a question that is not technical, but I don't know where else could I post it. I would like to start a small business out of my home as a freelance video editor, also videotaping birthday parties, weddings, that kind of thing, using a Canon HV20 and Vegas. Unfortunately I'm good at the technical part of it, but I have no idea how to setup the business. Things like how to advertise the service, or if I have to be registered legally somewhere, if I have to register with the IRS and pay taxes, if I have to give my customers an invoice for my services, how much do I charge, if I charge only when I deliver the DVD or half before and half when I deliver, all that kind of thing, I just have no clue. Does anybody know where can I learn anything about it?

You need to register to run a legal business. Some communities have business license requirements and typically you need a vendors license. You need to decide if it is a sole proprietorship, corporation, etc. You can probably contact a small business support group to help you. Local sales taxes and property taxes have to be filed on time or you get late fees, etc. Running a business is a big pain in the ...you know where. It isn't terrible as long as it is just you but once you hire someone then you need an accountant.
