My wife and I do picture slideshow dvd's each Christmas and we wanted to upgrade to something that doens't crash and we can use with video as well (we were using MS Movie Maker).
So I bought her Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum last spring. It was version 7.0. About a month later, before we even got a chance to install, I upgraded to Vista (which I needed to do for work). Much to my surprise, when I finally installed my Vegas it didn't work. I found out the hard way that if it doesn't say Vista on the box, then it doesn't run on Vista. Then I got burned on my rebate (GRRR!!!) and got frustrated and put the whole thing in a drawer.
Well, Christmas time is here and we want to do our DVD. So I pulled it out and called Sony customer service and it appears that I have to pay to upgrade to v8.0 or I can' use this at all on Vista.
It's $49 if I download it. It's $65 if I get the disks shipped to me. It appears that most of it is identical (VMS Plat. 8, DVD Arch Studio 4.5, newBlue videoFxMSP) except I don't receive the following things if I download:

Considering you are doing slide shows, you might find them beneficial to use as borders around the slides. I'm not sure which ones come with the upgrade but in my case I would want them. The same with the music. You can use the music as a background for your slides. I feel you will have a hard time finding free animate type backgrounds. Music is another matter but for $15, it would be a no-brainer for me since you will also be getting the manual. Pay the $15 and get the entire package.
