Vegas CD vs MS Power Point
by kentek on Nov 9, 2007 at 5:04:56 pm

Greetings,

I'm being asked to create a presentation made up of still images graphics, text and many video clips.
The powers that be want it to be a PowerPoint presentation so I can't do it my way.
How should I approach this project? I will use Vegas to clean up the videos. PP is supposed to be able to run and type of media.
I'm still concerned as to which formats to choose.

After the laughter dies down could someone give me a tip or two?

Thanks.

i'd stick to either WMV or MPEG-1 for any video clips as PPT seems to be happiest with either of these formats.
For graphics, I'd go with PNG or, if you have to, JPEG.

you could also convert it to .swf then embed the video using an activex control
flash is, after all, the most widely compatible video format on the planet

just look for "powerpoint flash integration" on the microsoft office site - gives you the breakdown on how to do it. Not the simplest method, but at least can embed the video, rather than link it.

:)

Tell them that PowerPoint is crap!!! That you can do a Fantastic Production in Vegas, that can not only be burnt on to DVD, for distribution to their whole company, but encoded into .WMV to play on any desktop or laptop computer! Tell them they are behind the times and if they want a slick Production, to allow you to Produce a GREAT product on Vegas. If the answer is "No", personally I'd drop the project. It's your call, but it's your name on the final product!!

I sort of agree with Rob. Powerpoint is pretty much crap. I have a client that has been making Powerpoint presentations for years for their clients and hired me to do a voice over for some. I convinced them to have me redo the entire powerpoint presentation using Vegas instead. Now they just send me their powerpoints and I "convert" them to a new presentation that can be uploaded to a server as a .wmv file, played on computer with a Video CD-R, or played on TV with a DVD. They are quite happy now with this "new way". Looks much more professional, much more versatile on how it can be used, etc.

another in agreement with rob....

though the last time i was 'forced' to present video in powerpoint i simply did a whizz-bang edit in vegas, then embedded it in pp.

the amount of people asking em how i did such and such in pp was quite amazing!!!

told 'em it was a trade secret - blood mba's in marketing!

Fuddam, I have the deepest respect for your opinion, and your talents in Vegas. I've seen your posted works and have learned a great deal from most of your posts. Unfortunately, you seem not to respect my opinion. Ok, fair enough! You go ahead and use PowerPoint for corporate Presentations. I certainly won't. Oh and by the way, dude, I don't drink coffee!!
Don thanks for the support, it's appreciated. I don't see what the big deal about PowerPoint is? To me it creates amateurish and simply unpolished presentations. On the other hand, I'm an extremely big fan of Vegas. Simply LOVE it! I would be curious as to know what software you used to convert PowerPoint into .AVI though, for future reference?
Leslie, so great to see another convert. Tell me is it truly a trade secret, or is it something we can all know? Not that I would ever use PowerPoint to embed video..........but curious minds just have to know.

hi rob,

think you mightr have got the wrong end of my stick, or (as my wife is apt to point out) i didn't make myself too clear:

a. if they have mainly video content with intro slides, then i simply edit the lot together (replacing their text slides) in vegas and export (embed) finished video in power point wrapper!

b. if they have a complete slide show with a bit of video, that's another matter - i either export pp to jpg and work in vegas, or if they're really proud of their crappy effects (and oh how proud the average mba can get with his fly-in text), i simply shoot the presentation off screen - adding a moving media generated boarder when necessary to fill the frame.

mind you, i haven't had to do either fotr a long time thank goodness....

Ah ok Leslie, I understand you now. The confusion was completely on my part. Fuddam, ya no worries..........let's put it past us? Your point about interactivity is well taken as well.

hehehehe. No offense intended, Rob. Sorry if it seemed that way :)
thing with the OP is that no mention made whether interactivity required, and if it is, vegas ain't gonna cut it. Agreed that if simply be a self-standing promo, Vegas would def produce more capable results than PP.

Just thought I'd add one thing - if you are stuck with using powerpoint at the clients request (I thought it was just me these days) version 2003 and up will also take an mpeg2 as embedded video. I use this method all the time (unfortunately).

Personally, if you can, I would take onboard the suggestion of using the provided slidepack as a storyboard and then provide something equal (or most likely better) yourself using Vegas only. Believe me, you don't want to still be doing content for other peoples slidepacks in 3 years time. Show them what you can do, and what powerpoint CAN'T do.

Best of luck!

Thanks to all on your responses. I see that I'm not the only one who views PP as "crap". I had no idea that this post would almost start a firestorm. (We don't need another one of those here in Southern CA)
I think I will let them do their PP stuff then grab the stills, and text and finish it the way I want to in Vegas.

After all, they depend on me to edit all of their video parts.

We'll see how it goes.
