DVDA - Subtitles - .srt to > .sub

Hi,
About a year and a half ago, in answer to another query, I came across this statement:
"There's a tool called Subtitle Workshop that is free and may at least help you convert *.srt files to *.sub files."
A friend has .avi files and accompanying .srt files. He asked me if I could join them, & make a DVD.
I responded that I don't know, but will check. It appears that DVDArchitect will accept .sub files, so presumably if they (the .srt files) could be converted to .sub, it would work.
If anyone knows where I could find this free tool I would appreciate hearing from you. Any hints or words to the wise would also be appreciated.
Thank you,
John

Thanks, Mike, but could use some more help.
My friend gave me a CD today. On it were two files: a movie (in .avi format) and a .srt file.
I tried opening the .avi movie in DVDA and it would not accept it at all; nor the .srt file.
I tried opening the .avi movie in Vegas and it showed on the timeline only its audio portion, not the video. Trying to load the .srt came up with an error message.
I then tried the Subtitle Workshop. It will take some time to figure that one out, but that's another story. Any input on why the problems with DVDA and Vegas?
John

John, as you probaly know, avi is just a wrapper for a number of different codecs.
From your description, the only thing that comes to mind is that the avi might be a DIVX or, even worse, an XVID file, neither of which Vegas really likes.
If no one here has any suggestions, I'd go to the Videohelp site and browse around there for some tools that may get you through this.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
