[Martin Sterling]"Does it speak directions? "
NO
[Martin Sterling]"Is it reliable for driving? "
YES
[Martin Sterling]"If it is, its worth the money on that premise alone if it can replace a Vehicle GPS device "
An iPhone & a GPS device are worlds apart, its like comparing apples and oranges.
First of all the iPhone has absolutely no GPS chip in it. Google maps on the iPhone works just like it douse on the computer. You must enter your starting position & your destination.
If you make a wrong turn it is up to you to figure out how to get back on course. It is exactly like printing out google map directions ant home and taking the paper with you in the car.
How can you compare two devices that do not even serve the same purpose.

The iphone doesn't have a navigator option or GPS in it and the google maps are just like the one's that you will find in your computer. This version of the iphone in my opinion can't replace a GPS and it's better to buy a GPS if you really need navigations on the road.
