3GS battery life?
by Mitch Ives on Sep 30, 2009 at 1:30:17 pm

When I replaced my original (non 3G) 16GB iPhone with a new 32gb black 3GS, I was amazed at what a battery vampire the new 3GS phone was. I can be down in the 40% battery range at the end of a single day after starting at 100% in the morning. The old iPhone could go three days without a re-charge. I'm not doing anything different, in fact I use the phone less now (sign of the economy) than I used to.

Anybody else seen this?

FWIW, I also just picked up a second 3GS (this one a white 16gb model) for my other business, and it doesn't seem to be using up the battery as quickly.

Same for me. I purchased the iRecharge (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CellBoost/AC10372A/) to make it through a long day.

My 32GB 3GS does use the battery a tiny bit faster than my first generation iPhone, but the difference is negligible, and I use it a LOT.

A few things to try:

Check your backlight settings; if you turn it down a bit, it will make a significant difference in your battery life... whenever I'm running low on battery and nowhere near a charger, I kill the backlight to keep the phone going for a while.

Turn down your email check settings; it uses more battery when the phone checks for emails every 15 minutes.

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if you're not using them... they're drawing power too.

I did turn down the backlight and disabled bluetooth (which I didn't need to do with the old one). I have wi-fi on as I'm near wi-fi networks a lot. I'll have to check the email thing, but I get a lot of emails and I'm sure it's on 15 minutes, which was fine for the old one.

[Mitch Ives] "The old iPhone could go three days without a re-charge"

Thats VARY VARY amazing, most people I know only get 1 day out of the iPhone battery whether they have a 3G or 3GS.

Count yourself lucky.

The iPhone I was referring to was the original 2.5G (edge) in the second rev 16GB version. It still has incredible battery life. I have two 3GS models... a 32Gb and a 16GB. The 32GB is a vampire on the battery, whereas the 16GB doesn't seem to be as bad, though it gets less use.

I know Apple is tracking a battery problem with the 3.1 update, but those people are getting way less than a day out of theirs... some only a few hors, so I don't think that's what I'm seeing...

I had a similar problem, I was told by someone at the Apple store that 3g uses a lot more battery then the edge network. So if I'm getting low I will switch to edge. The backlighting issue is a good tip as well. And using many of the games or the video camera will suck power like crazy.
