So, in order to get the new iPhone 2.1 firmware, one has to install iTunes 8. Only problem is that iTunes 8 is causing problems all over the place.

iTunes 8 is causing major connectivity problems with an Airport Extreme. Looks like a big step backwards on that one. The boards and MacNN have all those stories. Thank God I didn't install it on the windows partition, as apparently BSOD's are the reward for installing Itunes 8 over there.

So I guess there is no 2.1 for us. That's not too bad since we have a 1G iPhone, but if I had a 3G, I'd be real unhappy since those folks desperately need the 2.1 fixes.

We'll just have to wait for iTunes 8.01 I suppose...

I haven't heard about itunes 8 causing problems all over the place. Some Googling shows me that you are correct. But the problems appear to go away if you open up your firewall (if you're even using one) to allow iTunes traffic. Apparently there's also another issue for those who have not updated their Airport Extreme firmware. So you'll want to do that.

But man, the Genius feature is awesome. You just pick a song that represents how you feel right now, press the Genius button, and hit Play. Instant playlist with songs from your library that go well with that song.

Mitch,

Just so you know, if you plug in your IPhone, tell it to update to 2.1, hit cancel when you receive the message to update ITunes, it will update the phone without updating iTunes.

I just did it completely by accident...

Odd, the iPhone indicated that it was updating both software and firmware, but it did not. I guess the iTunes updater does need to run or else the updates get rejected.

Sorry for the miscue above...

Mine actually tells me there is an update, but when I hit okay, it says I need iTunes 8 and stops. So, I actually did that and cancelled, but it went nowhere. You must be living a charmed life :-)

So, today I took my iPhone and cable into the Apple store and updated my iPhone. When they asked why I told them that my friend has been having airport issues since he installed iTunes8 & QT 7.5.5. He has an Airport Extreme with the latest firmware... still problems. I've also seen issues with 7.5.5 and FCP... hey maybe 10.5.5 will fix them?
