Just tried the update and now my phone is bricked.
Apparently, all servers have crashed due to the overwhelming response? Don't know.
2.0 downloaded and then went into a back up restore mode.
The phone was backed up, firmware restored, but now iTunes is hung saying it can't connect to the Store and to try again later. Can't access my phone at all through iTunes and I can only make emergency calls.
I did a small web search and apparently, it's happening all over the place. Apple support is down, can't even call them.
For now, I have no phone. Hell of a day to work from home. Hell of a f*cked up day for Apple.

[Ron Lindeboom]"Ah, Apple updaters. Gotta love 'em. "
This wasn't Apples fault, at the end of a a restore on the iphone (and the 2.0 update does a restore not a update) the computer connects to ATT to verify the phone account. It was ATT that dropped the ball here.

Yes, both Kathlyn and I got our new iPhones yesterday -- mostly so we could experience the insanity of the lines and the crowds and the novelty of the experience (an article with pictures will shortly follow) -- and they both were lit up and activated just as pretty as you please.
Took hours to get into the store and get served but once we did, it was immediately working.
Apple was getting direct access to the AT&T system and they weren't taking "later" for an answer.
But Apple's notorious updaters are still valid as a bone of contention, but in this case was indeed AT&T's fault. I guess they aren't used to people actually wanting to do business with them -- at least not in quantity!
:o)

I believe it. I was a victim too. And even though I only had emergency calls for two hours, I also noticed I couldn't make those calls because the phone wouldn't connect to the network. They should have known all of us loyal Apple owners, all 6 million of us, would be updating at the same time! ;-) They hyped it up enough...and on a lazy Friday afternoon too!!! LOL
Re: 48 hours later... by Ron Thompson on Jul 13, 2008 at 2:49:19 pm
on a side note...the update is great. I LOVE that they added multiple servers for POP outgoing email!!! Apps Store is great...though I learned quickly to read the reviews before buying. I wonder what this will ultimately mean for web apps?
On a negative note, has anyone noticed occasional hanging? frozen letters while typing? It comes back after about 5 seconds, but the phone never hung before. And I'm also seeing a slight decrease in battery performance. Could some of these apps be running in the background? or maybe some other setting, like fetch/push? (which I have disabled until I set .Me up). How do you insure that apps are exited? I assume the home button.

Don't know if the apps will run in the background, but the restore completely resets all of the settings I had setup to save power, such as how fast your email refreshes and when it checks for networks (i.e. all the time or manually). Those make some differences in battery life.
My favorite app so far is the free remote app from Apple. No matter where I am in the house or at the office, I can bring up my computer's or apple tv's itunes list on my phone and play tunes through house sound. Makes changing music extremely easy no matter where I am. It's totally cool.

Yeah, I went through and did that too. We'll see what the next 48 hours hold. I've also been pretty heavy on Facebook app, and YES the Apple Remote. The remote is SICK!! What will they think of next? I have AirTunes in my office and at home...and about 4 Macs connected to the network with different libraries. Being able to browse, play music, and have total control without physically going to the computer is a beautiful thing! and its FREE!!!!
There is an item in the settings that allows Remote to stay connected...I turned that off. You can still control iTunes at anytime, but I think turning that off breaks the physical connection between mac and iPhone. Perhaps that could help with battery life.

[Ron Thompson]"They should have known all of us loyal Apple owners, all 6 million of us, would be updating at the same time!"
From what the guy at the Apple Store told us on Friday morning when the whole debacle was unfolding, it wasn't Apple's servers that were the problem. Apple had its side covered. Unfortunately, part of the process drew on AT&T's servers and they were crashed due to the amount of traffic being thrown at them. How true is this? I don't know but they got both Kathlyn and me through just fine on activation and we walked out of the store with our new 3Gs in working order. I asked the guy how he did it and he told me that they were using the Apple servers and when it came to the AT&T portion he was accessing the private servers that AT&T had set aside for the Apple Store activations.
I guess the moral of the story is: Apple knew they'd get deluged and were ready for it; AT&T, on the other hand, weren't ready as they have probably never had so many people all want to get on their system all at once -- after all, it's AT&T and there's no love lost between them and their customers.

In anticipation of the deluge today, I decided it was safer to download it yesterday and manually install it. Everything went fine... it has worked flawlessly.
I have to say that I agree, the performance is a bit snappier. It feels a bit more polished. I love the multiple delete function in Mail. The search box in the Phone and contacts is also nice...
