"Missing features in iPhone" List
by Mitch Ives on Jun 18, 2008 at 3:17:49 pm

I have to say how odd it is that Apple "gets" some of the tough things right and then totally blows the easy things.

I'd like to hear other people's suggestions for obvious changes to the iPhone software. Version 2.0 doesn't seem to have addressed more than one or two shortcomings. Here's a few to start the list:

1) The new iPhone still doesn't have voice dialing... a feature that most free phones have.

2) In Calendar, appointments are represented by a single dot. Most phones have the mark represent the proportionate amount of the day that this appointment represents. That way you can tell at a glance, which days are the most booked. On the iPhone you have to manually explore each dot. Clicking on the day only displays the start time. Why not display both the start and the stop time?

3) The only way to have a single entry span several days is to make it an all-day event... meaning you have to give up showing the actual time (say 9-2).

Given that the other manufacturers are starting to respond to the iPhone, I think Apple needs to fill in the obvious holes... perhaps we can gather the most popular and forward them to Apple...

Mitch it appears that you seem to be upset because the iPhone did not live up to you personal expectations. Nobody calmed that the iPhone is for every one. Maybe you are one of the people it was not meant for. People here do not like continued complained about the same product from the same person, it reflects poorly on you in my opinion.

Perhaps you should go get a blackberry.

[Zane Barker] "People here do not like continued complained about the same product from the same person, it reflects poorly on you in my opinion."

Wow, I guess that I had better just turn the site off then, as I regularly complain about things I don't like -- and one of those things is the RIDICULOUS way in which the iPhone handles email one at a time, no batch handling of any kind.

Are you going to tell me to shut up and that the iPhone wasn't meant for me, too???

Just so you know: Mitch has been a part of our communities -- having started with us as part of the one we built before the COW -- since about 1996, as I recall. He has helped so many people over the years that I have lost track. He's earned the right to a pet peeve.

Call me crazy but I always thought the purpose of online forums was to find actual solutions to problems, not a place to rant and rave because a product you purchased does not have the features you wanted. If those features are that important then should you not have made sure the device had them before you purchased it.

What is the point in getting upset about something you have no control over. If the iPhone dose not do what you want then ask if someone knows how it may be accomplished or summit a feature request to Apple. But what is the point in just complaining. Nobody likes a complainer.

I made it a rule a long time ago to not complain unless it was something I had control over.

Seeing that I have been making media professionals online forums communities for 13 years this week (our anniversary is either the 22nd or 25th of June, 1995 -- I can never remember the exact day) -- I think I have a pretty good idea of what these things are for and are not for. If answers were all that users wanted, then our search engine would get a lot more traffic than it does; it seems interaction is at least as popular as answers alone.

If the iPhone does ALL that you need, Zane, then you don't need much and Apple wasted a lot of time and development money bringing to market the next great thing just around the corner.

Also, using your yardstick, then most everyone in this site should pack their bags and get out of this industry as there are few here that don't need more than their present equipment/software provides. If it did, there would be no need for upgrades or updates.

I think the email system in the iPhone is useless for someone like me that gets hundreds of emails a day. Does it mean that the iPhone is useless? No, I love my iPhone -- it's the email program I hate. If that is more than you can tolerate, then please realize that I am no Apple fanboy and don't plan on signing up to get my card anytime soon.

Best regards,

Ron Lindeboom

[Ron Lindeboom] "I think the email system in the iPhone is useless for someone like me that gets hundreds of emails a day"

You see Apple targeted the software to the average user and the average user does not get that much mail.

Hopefully someone will develop a 3rd party mail app for the iphone that you will find adequate.

I would love a 3rd party app for email -- if it solved my issues.

But in fairness, Apple didn't tell early adopters what the features were in the original iPhones. We bought on what appeared to be there -- much like video editors and motion graphics artists.

;o)

[Zane Barker] "I made it a rule a long time ago to not complain unless it was something I had control over."

Then why are you complaining about Mitch???

Just curious.

There is no point in arguing about all this. No one here can solve Mitch's complaints.

Thanks for pointing out how things work here on the COW. I had a BlackBerry. That's how I know the way that things should work. The iPhone should be ahead of that.

Ron, thanks for the kind words.

Geez... you're kidding right? The purpose of this thread was to gather everyone's ideas for improvements, find the common ones and send them to Apple. That IS how you get solutions.

For the record, it was only after I figured out that version 2.0 software wasn't addressing any of these problems, that I posted to start the list. Things like a spam filter and voice dialing are pretty common. I didn't realize I was asking for so much...
