Internet sharing over iPhone
by Devin Crane on Jun 2, 2008 at 5:53:38 pm

I've heard that Edge runs at a snails pace but is it possible to share the internet connection on the iPhone with my Macbook? In other words I want to get rid of my DSL line and connect to the internet via iPhone. This would justify me getting an 3G iPhone when they come out.

Well we can only speak for the capabilities of the iPhone that is out now, because nobody knows for sure when a new iPhone will come out and what its capabilities will be.

The current iPhone cannot do what you want it to do it can only use the edge network on the phone it cannot be hooked to the computer and let the computer use it.

I haven't found that the edge network is to bad at all, for a phone it is fine.

I would look into purchasing a internet card from your phone provider to connect to your computer.

actually, there are ways to tether your iphone to your computer, and connect your laptop to it as an access point.
there were even programs released in the app store that allowed you to do this easily.
however, it's against apple/att's EULA or something similar, and the apps were subsequently pulled from the itunes store.

there is still a way to do this, but would not recommend it, as at&t will be able to tell that the amount of data being received by your edge connection is FAR more than would ever be used by normal iphone procedures, and could lead to at&t disconnecting you, legal action, etc.

having said the caveat, there are still ways to pursue it, and those ways can be found by carefully tailored google searches :D
