opinionated editor for hire
by grinner hester (grinner) on Jun 2, 2008 at 10:56:34 pm

20 years in the industry has made it impossible to beat around the bush:

I'll work for you for $190k a year pluis benefits.

Dress Code: I like to wear tie-dyed t-shirts so unless those are in the dress code, I'd rather not hear about one.

Micro Management: I like to work alone. I don't mind oppeasing the client, as that's the gig but a boss coming in at 6pm with a "what if that font were yellow" will get ya made fun of when you leave the room.

Drug Tests: I don't do drug tests. I can save you some money by checking positive. I'll show up to work stoned and step outside 5 times to burn one during the day. It's cool though. I share.

Hours: yeeeeeaah, I'm gonna have to bail at about 5 every day. Assumming I dragged my ass in by 10, anyway. It's not that I'll be moon-lighting or anything like that, I'd just rather be out in the sun that at work.

Weekends: Dude, unless I totally dig you and we're hangin' out somewhere, I'll see ya monday
at like, 10:30.

Non-competes. I aint singin' shit. If someone pops up later on with a sweeter gig, I'm totally there. Consider this your incentive to be cool.

Benefits. Load me up. It's the freakin man that has me open to a staff gig in the first place. Nevermind the 401k, I'll be completely bored and out of there in 2 years anyway.

Freelance? Yeah, I can freelance there instead of staffing there. I'm cool as hell and I travel. I'm $150/hr or we can hash out a weekly deal. Matter of fact, email me a script, I'll bust out a turn-key production you can mark up and we'll break out early.

Haha! This is great man. Classic post for sure. My only real response is 1992 called, they want their editor back.

lol
how did you know?
true enough but their budget has not changed. They'd like me to stop by next time I'm in town though. Something about a meeting in the drum booth.

You know though, the more I look at your post the more realistic it really is. I mean, I've been making 600-700 a day and sure there are some dry spells here and there but for the most part its not that far off. And really, come on, I've been cutting for 10 years, I can do most of the stuff myself, I don't need a producer in the room. Just gimme feedback and notes and it'll be done by the end of the week.

I've never worked anyplace in post where there was ANY king of dress code, so thats all good. And yeah, I'm just fine w/ a 6-8 hour work day. The process is creative and if I'm inspired and not burned out more happens in that time anyway. Four hours of a 10 hour day is spent listening to other editors bitch most of the time, so night shift is ok lol.
