Multiprocessing Crasher

I have an 8core MacPro with 9GigsRam.
AE crashed on NucleoPro fast render using MPEG4s in the timeline. Bad Idea. So I replaced media with ANIMATION movs. Still bombs out. Turn on MultiProcessing in prefs before disabling NucleoPro, since last time NP disabled automatically. Problem is, it still crashed on render and the worst is to follow:
If I try changing AE prefs to turn off MultiProcessing, the app crashes on me. It somehow is locked into that setting regardless whether I deleted (& empty trash) the preferences for AE or not.
I.E.: user/library/Preferences...
Where does AE store this setting so I can try manually delete it? Or is there something in the NP realm on my system that needs to be fixed?

What are your Memory & Caches values set to in the AE Prefs?
What does the Resource Settings window show (Nucleo icon in the menu bar)?
As far as I know the setting is only stored in the 'Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs' file. There is a line that reads "Enable MP" = "1" in the ["MP"] section - it changes to = "0" when disabled.
Make sure that all the After Effects/aeselflink/aerendercore processes are no longer running in the Activity Monitor before trashing the file (AE will save the file again if it's missing when it closes, including all these background AE processes).
When you've trashed the file everything in AE should reset including the 'Tip of the Day' - if you've turned it off and it doesn't show after trashing the prefs then you didn't get the right file.
