29.97 to 24/25 frame rate conversion

Hi,
Received some 29.97 interlaced HD material as a QT, needed to get it to 24fps progressive... Episode did a good job but some frames had terrible thick interlaced artifacts, either across the whole frame (looking like venetian blinds) or in parts of movement.
Would this be caused by inconsistent or changing cadence in the original material?
Also deinterlaced it in AE and had better results with certain shots but then had held frames all over the place as well. Ended up editing the 2 versions together in the end to get a reasonable result.
Has anyone else tried a similar route or seen these results before?

I've seen the "venetian blind" effect as you call it, any time I attempt to deinterlace footage that isn't properly flagged as upper or lower field dominant in the source. So double check that the source has this correctly set. Easiest way is to drag it into FCP and look at the field dominance column.
