Multiple of 4…follow up??
by Daniel De Avila (Daniel6500) on Jun 16, 2008 at 2:22:10 pm

Hello

This was briefly mentioned back in February.

Encoding with the current version of Episode:
1080 50i DVCPro HD to WMV9 480 x 270.

However Episode displays an error message informing me to change the resolution to a multiple of 4. So 480 x 270 (which as far as I know is an accurate scale down resolution of 1080i footage) becomes 484 x 272.

This doesn’t happen with the older version of Episode Pro.

Might it be related to the anamorphic video resolution of the master footage?

Sincerely
Daniel

PS: I guess I can test that with some 1920 x 1080 EX1 footage…

While this is link talks about Flash frame sizes, it's a decent guide for other codecs too.
http://www.flashsupport.com/books/fvst/files/tools/video_sizes.html

These days though, some will go down to multiple of 2. Actually if you've ever looked at the BBC WMV encodes you'll see how they tweak/pad to get a "good" multiple.

I also think 480x720 should be acceptable. I think several users have contacted Telestream about this.

Hmmm…thanks Craig

I did contact telestream about this and the response was that the newer versions of episode used a new version of the windows encoder – which needs to have multiples of four.

Other 1920 x 1080 formats are OK for 480 x 270 encodes.
Thanks for the link. Its very handy for someone who needs to do a bit more homework in regards to encoding to the proper resolutions and why.

Daniel
