Which is the best image sequence with alpha channel to render out to,
in terms of pristine quality...Targa or PNG ?

Both are identical. They both are lossless formats, so you have no loss in image quality.

TGA can use compression, and PNG uses compression, but they both use lossless compression (like a ZIP file).

I personally use PNG more than TGA because it typically results in smaller image sizes, but I use TGA too.
