In the tutorial it is advised not to use the uncompressed avi option because it eats up too much space. Several option formats are suggested but none of them appear on my drop down list in the avi options box.

Google "huffyuv" or "lagarith" and you'll find sites to download those codecs, as well as info on how to install. Once you have them installed, they'll show in the codec list in particleIllusion.
