Installing new Raid Card...need some help
by Scott S. on Jul 23, 2008 at 3:02:29 am

Hello,

I recently purchased a CalDigit Raid Card and went through the installation process this evening.

When I powered it up I got the flashing question mark. I proceeded to go back into the machine, uninstall and then re-install the components to make sure everything was seated correctly.
Same problem on the next boot. I eventually got it to boot correctly by zapping the PRAM, but my system drive showed up orange and in the info says it's connected via SCSI???
Also, my system is not recognizing my other 3 internal drives.

All drivers have been downloaded and EFI is 1.3 like it is supposed to be. So I opened Raid Shield and saw that it had my boot drive as #1 in raid and my other 3 drives are recognized, just not raided at the moment.

Now, for obvious reasons, I don't want my boot drive to be part of the raid, I was hoping to just Raid 0 the other 3 internals in my system.
I am having trouble finding any documentation that covers any of this and I am hesitant to do anything as I don't want to erase my system drive.

FYI: Here are my specs.
Mac Pro (Early 2008) 2.8GHz 8 core
10GB RAM, 320GB WD system drive, (3) 750BG WD internal media drives.
ATI Radeon 2600 XT, Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme and Caldigit Raid Card.

Thank you for any help. I apologize if the answer is staring me in the face, but I am new to installing my own raid and have searched all over to find any info.
I appreciate the wealth of knowledge this forum shares.

Thanks
Scott S

Using RAID Shield, simply select only the three drives that you want to RAID and select create array. If you followed the instructions in the manual you would have left your system drive in bay one. So that would be the drive that you would not select to create the RAID with.

You should use the recommended hard drives for the best results.

Hi Jared,
Thanks for your reply.
I did leave my boot drive in bay 1, so that should be all set.

So, if I understand you correctly all I need to do is "create new array", deselect drive 1 and select the other 3 drives?
(It seems so easy, but I'm just cautious of not loosing everything on my system drive).

I am out on the road now, so I can't try it until this evening, by I do appreciate your help.

[As for the approved drives, unfortunately I purchased the drives before the raid card came out, and had them in my system already.
They are Western Digital Caviar SE16 drives 750GB.
Of course, my luck they are not on the approved list, but I'm not sure that I would be able to return or excange them now that they have been used. Is it imperative to get the other drives?].

Again, thank you so much.
Scott

Ahhh...
Thank you so much Jared, I'll try it this evening.
Guess I was a little gun shy, as this is a whole new system and I didn't want to have to start over from scratch.

Best wishes
Scott
