Sleeping HD okay?
by Bob Cole on Nov 5, 2009 at 3:21:23 am

I've seen the discussions here and elsewhere about how it is better for HD's to stay powered up. What about sleeping them?

I'm about to take delivery on a CalDigit HDOne, and the only thing that bothers me is the "green" issue: I'd rather not waste energy running all eight drives constantly, but I don't want to wear out drives either by turning them off and on overmuch.

So is letting them "sleep" the best of both worlds, or the worst of both worlds: bad for the HD's longevity, and still wasting energy?

You will be fine shutting off at the end of the day or at the end of the week. There is no reason to waste power to keep the drives running all the time.

Drives were made to be run, but shutting them down for periods of time while they are not being used is not going to affect anything

[Jared Picune] "Drives were made to be run"

Thanks. Has anyone specifically looked into "sleeping" HD's vs. turning them off?

There is not a sleep mode, the drives in the HDPro/HDOne are running or powered down.
