looking for opinions on HD Element
by Phil Yunker on Aug 27, 2009 at 10:00:32 pm

Hello,
I'm looking at buying a 6TB HD Element. I will be editing on a MacPro 2x3.2GHz Quad Core / 16GB RAM, using Final Cut Pro ver, 6 (soon ver. 7). Editing formats mainly include, 1080i HDV, 720pHDV, DVCPRO720p60, 1080i PRORES 422 and 1080 60i PRO RES HQ (PRO RES HQ for mastering only.)
I'm looking for opinions of the Element from current users on rather or not they would suggest buying one or not and why. Please let me know the good, the bad and the ugly, any known issues?

Thanks.

PHIL

Got one configured at 6TB several months ago, w/ their RAID card. I had been using a jumble of small G-tech and Lacie drives... daisy chained and making a mess of everything.
Got some projects in XDCam 1080 and knew I was going to be asking for trouble... shopped around and landed on CD. for the price/capacity comparison, I figured I couldn't beat it, and I haven't looked back. Truly the easiest install I"ve ever had. (I also added some internal SATA's to the G5 at the sam time, and that took longer than the RAID card and the CalDigit box. They had asked what stripe level I wanted, so I guess that saved a bunch of time, as I didn't have to wait for any initializing...

I've called tech support twice w/ general (non-trouble) issues and a human answered and got me a quick reply.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. Sounds like you had the same problem I'm having with multiple G-tech and CalDigit 2-3TB drives making a massive mess and headache. I didn't know you could get it pre-stripeed, nice to know.

Thanks again.

Phil,

I have a 4TB Element and love it. I do mostly DVCProHD and ProRes stuff. I mix these on the the timeline with no problem. As for CalDigit, you won't find a better company. They want you to be happy. I have been a loyal customer for about 3 years now.

Ken
