HD Element and Raid Card won't boot 50% of the time
by Jack Tinsley on Aug 17, 2009 at 10:37:41 am

8 core Mac, HD Element, Raid Card. About half the time the computer won't boot and displays a folder with a question mark in the middle. Then I try it again, most times that is enough. The last time it took two time for the computer to boot. What is causing that and is that what I should expect?

Thanks for the help...

No, this is not normal behavior and shouldn't be expected.

There could be a number of things causing this issue, and I'll need to get more info to proceed.

But try resetting your PRAM first and see if that helps.

If not let me know how you have every thing configured, the location of your boot drive and how many other drives you have, what RAID level and what not.

You can call our support to and they can walk you though it over the phone if that is easier.

Card is in the right slot, System Boot Drive is in computer drive slot 1, Slot 2-3-4 have raid 5 stripe using Raid Shield, External HDElement 6TB. This starter from the very first. I tripped down the system to only the cards and drives necessary to make it run and it did it then. I first thought it was a card seating problem because the ipass cable was very short and it was difficult to attach. The best I can tell it is seated properly.

In system preferences you can select your startup disk. If you do that and restart, do you get better results? Did you try to reset the PRAM?

Let me know.

Thanks.
