Looping compositions?
by DHaynes on May 21, 2006 at 6:25:18 pm

Hi, I'm trying to loop a composition in my movie. I have a two second spinning radar thingy that needs to loop 5 times in 10 seconds. I know the answer is simple and there's a way to do it without just duplicating it a bunch of times. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Where you have the keyframes to spin the radar, add this expression:

loopOut("cycle", 0)

Click Dan's head above and scroll o "Animating a Walk Cycle" for details on looping (how to avoid a 1 frame hickup). There's a downloadable project file there with examples of the various loops.

Oh, yeah you need to lengten the comp to 10 seconds.

Or, render a movie of the 2 seconds then reimport and right-click the footage > Interpret Footage>Main> then click loop and set it for 5 times, then you wouldn't need the loop expression in the previous post. But the expression is the easiest, methinks.

Hey guys,

I'm french and I always wondered what "loop" meant? Does it mean to disappear and reappear at a certain rate?

Thx.

To loop basically means 'to repeat'. When an animation is looping continuously, it's going on forever.

Create your 2 second comp.

Nest that comp into a 10 second comp.

In the main (10 sec.) comp, select your nested comp, and then Enable Time remapping on the layer -
in AE 6.5 it's: Layer > Enable Time Remapping. In AE 7 it's: Layer > Time > Enable Time remapping

2 keyframes are created. Go to the last(second) keyframe, and then move one frame back. Use the create keyframe button to add a new keyframe - you will have 2 keyframes right next to eachother in the timline. Delete the last (now the 3rd) Time Remap Keyframe.

Lengthen the layer to the full length of the comp (10 seconds).

Alt click on the time remap keyframe stop watch and add the expression:

loopOut(type="cycle")

It should now be looping over and over.
