Making an AE puppet with multiple layers
by Matt Darnall on Sep 12, 2009 at 5:46:24 pm

I have a Psd file with a puppet I created in photoshop. For every part of the body I'd like to manipulate, I created a separate layer for them. The puppet tool, from what I understand, is made to manipulate a single layered image. I'm trying to create a cutout looking puppet, by just swiveling separate layers. Is there a simple way to hinge them all together?

Thanks for any help!

Hinging the layers together (as you put it) is normally accomplished with parenting. See "Parent and child layers" for an introduction and some links to tutorials that show how to use parenting for character animation of the sort that you describe.

Dan also has a nifty page on expressions and inverse kinematics.
